Egypt And European Union Launch €7 Million Green Facility To Enhance Sustainability Efforts
The European Union and Egypt have taken a significant step towards environmental sustainability by launching the European Green Facility initiative with a fund of €7 million. This initiative is designed to propel Egypt towards its green transformation goals, aligning closely with its developmental objectives. This collaboration was formalized in Cairo during the Water Week event by Rania Al-Mashat, Egypt's Minister of Planning and Economic Development, and Christian Berger, the EU Ambassador.
Following the strengthening of ties between Egypt and the European Union in March, this initiative underscores their commitment to a sustainable future. The announcement came during a visit by the President of the European Commission, marking a new era in strategic relations. A political declaration was endorsed by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, alongside a substantial funding package of €7.4 billion earmarked for development and joint investments, emphasizing green and sustainable initiatives.

In addition to financial backing, the European Green Facility initiative will offer wide-ranging technical support. This support aims to bolster Egypt's strategies across various sectors, enhance water governance, and encourage collaboration between the public and private sectors. By providing such comprehensive assistance, the initiative seeks to facilitate Egypt's ambitious plans for a greener economy and sustainable development.
The partnership between Egypt and the European Union extends to specific areas of cooperation, including the advancement of Egypt's National Green Hydrogen Strategy. Moreover, it aims to boost renewable energy projects under the NWFE (Nexus of Water, Food, and Energy) program. These efforts are pivotal in transitioning Egypt towards renewable energy sources, demonstrating the tangible steps being taken under the umbrella of the European Green Facility initiative.
This initiative not only signifies a deepened partnership between Egypt and the EU but also represents a concerted effort towards achieving global sustainability goals. By focusing on green transformation and renewable energy, Egypt is positioning itself as a leader in environmental stewardship in the region, supported by the European Union's commitment to fostering sustainable development initiatives.
