EGA Launches Final Reduction Cell In Next Generation Smelting Technology Pilot Project

Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has initiated the final reduction cell in its advanced smelting technology pilot project at Al Taweelah. This step is crucial for preparing EGA's EX smelting technology for large-scale use, marking a significant milestone in the company's growth and reinforcing its status as a preferred technology provider in the aluminium sector.

EGA's EX represents the 10th generation of their smelting technology, designed to produce more aluminium while consuming less energy and emitting fewer pollutants. Homaid Al Shimmari, Chairman of EGA, highlighted the importance of this technology, stating, "EX technology enhances EGA’s ability to remain at the forefront of the global aluminium industry. Our aim is to apply this technology in our planned facility in Oklahoma, the first new primary aluminium production plant to be built in the United States since 1980. As part of this effort, we will test the technology using alumina refined from bauxite sourced from multiple locations, to further prove its potential for global deployment."

EGA Starts Final Reduction Cell Pilot Project

Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, CEO of EGA, described the EX pilot as a strategic initiative that continues EGA's legacy of technological leadership. He expressed optimism about the project's outcomes: "The pilot of our new EX technology is a strategic project for EGA, and is the latest chapter in our long history of industry leadership through technology innovation. The performance of EX reduction cells during start-up and in the first weeks of production has been even better than expected, and I am excited about what this technology will achieve. I thank each colleague who worked so hard to develop this new technology and build the pilot in Al Taweelah."

For over three decades, EGA has been developing its own aluminium smelting technologies within the UAE. Since the 1990s, all expansions have utilised EGA's innovations, with older potlines being upgraded accordingly. This technological evolution has led to a 37.5% reduction in electricity needed per tonne of aluminium since 1980.

In January 2025, EGA achieved recognition as an Industry 4.0 global lighthouse by the World Economic Forum—the first such designation for an industrial company in the UAE and an aluminium company worldwide. This accolade underscores EGA's commitment to digital transformation initiated in 2021 aimed at enhancing cost efficiency, agility, safety, and sustainability.

The construction phase for ten pilot pots commenced late in 2024 with energisation occurring by mid-June 2024. The EX pilot also aims to validate cutting-edge Industry 4.0 capabilities within aluminium production globally.

EGA pioneered international licensing of its core process technologies when it partnered with Aluminium Bahrain in 2016. This agreement allowed Aluminium Bahrain to use EGA’s DX+ Ultra technology for their Potline 6 expansion project.

Since launching its digital transformation strategy two years ago, EGA has implemented over 80 Industry 4.0 initiatives resulting in approximately $100 million financial impact.

The successful implementation of these projects highlights EGA's ongoing commitment to innovation and sustainability within the global aluminium industry.
