Dubai RTA's Route 2020 Wins Global Gold For Environmental Sustainability
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has been honoured with the Green World Award - Global Gold Winner category by The Green Organisation, based in the UK. This accolade celebrates exceptional achievements in environmental performance, resource efficiency, support for sustainable development goals, and carbon reduction.
The Route 2020 project was recognised for its significant contribution to reducing carbon emissions by 35,319 tonnes. The project also implemented best practices for environmental conservation. RTA's Rail Agency provided concrete evidence that led to this award.

The metro system incorporated energy-saving technologies such as the HESOP system, which recycles electrical energy generated during train braking. Additionally, Automatic Train Control (ATC) coasting was used to enhance energy efficiency. These initiatives highlight RTA's commitment to sustainability.
RTA had already secured the LEED Gold certificate for the seven stations of Route 2020 from the US Green Building Council. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) programme recognises buildings that apply top-tier strategies and practices. This certification underscores the project's adherence to high environmental standards.
The Route 2020 Project stretches from Jabal Ali Station to the Expo 2020 site, covering a total length of 15 km. This includes 11.8 km of elevated tracks and 3.2 km underground. It connects seven stations, five elevated and two underground, serving densely populated areas like the Gardens, Discovery Gardens, Al Furjan, Jumeirah Golf Estates, Dubai Investment Park, and the Expo site.
Serving a Large Population
This extensive network caters to a population of about 270,000 people. The project's infrastructure is designed with energy efficiency in mind, contributing to its recognition at the Prix Versailles Architecture and Design Awards 2022 for its outstanding architecture and design.
The Green World Award is among the most prestigious environmental awards globally. It acknowledges efforts by governments, ministries, and individuals who significantly impact environmental sustainability. The award has three categories: Gold, Silver, and Bronze.
This recognition enhances the green credentials of winners, boosting their environmental reputation and standing. RTA's achievement in winning this award highlights its dedication to sustainable development and effective resource use.
Environmental sustainability remains a core pillar of the Route 2020 project. The project's award-winning architecture and design stations exemplify this commitment through their energy-efficient infrastructure.
RTA has also undertaken various green initiatives aimed at conserving energy and water resources. These measures further solidify its role as a leader in promoting sustainable urban transport solutions.
The Route 2020 project not only serves as a vital transportation link but also sets a benchmark for future projects aiming for environmental excellence.
