Dubai Police Successfully Thwart $25 Million Pink Diamond Heist In Just Eight Hours

Dubai Police have successfully intercepted a plot to steal a rare pink diamond valued at $25 million. The operation, named "Pink Diamond," led to the arrest of the gang responsible for the attempted theft and smuggling of this unique gem out of the country. The diamond, certified by a top gemological institute, is noted for its exceptional purity, with only a 0.01 percent chance of finding another like it.

The criminals devised an elaborate scheme to deceive the diamond's owner, a jeweller, into believing that a wealthy buyer was interested in purchasing it. They posed as affluent individuals by renting luxury cars and arranging meetings at high-end hotels. This convinced the merchant to move the diamond from his secure shop, allowing them to steal it.

Dubai Police used advanced technology to track down the three suspects, all of Asian nationality. They were able to locate and arrest them before they could smuggle the diamond out of the country in a small refrigerator destined for Asia. The pink diamond was safely recovered during these operations.

The diamond is classified as Fancy Intense and weighs 21.25 carats. It is renowned for its clarity, symmetry, and polish, receiving an Excellent rating. Its extraordinary value made it an attractive target for theft, prompting the gang’s meticulous planning over more than a year.

The jeweller had imported this rare gem from Europe to sell in Dubai. The gang closely monitored its arrival and crafted a sophisticated plan to steal it by posing as intermediaries representing a potential buyer. They arranged multiple meetings with the merchant at luxurious venues to build trust.

To further convince him of their legitimacy, they hired a well-known diamond expert to authenticate the gem. Eventually, they lured him to a villa under the guise of meeting the 'buyer.' Once there, they seized the opportunity to grab the diamond and flee.

Rapid Response Praised

Upon reporting the theft, Dubai Police quickly formed a task force to identify and locate the suspects who had initially lived together but separated after committing the crime. The police raided their locations simultaneously, apprehending them and recovering the stolen diamond before it left Dubai.

The jeweller praised Dubai Police’s swift response as "astonishing," noting their speed and professionalism gave him confidence in resolving the case promptly. He recounted how patrols arrived within minutes after he called 999 and began investigating while providing constant reassurance.

Industry Safety Standards Emphasised

The trader has been operating in Dubai since 2005 and admitted being caught off guard by this scheme. He urged others in his industry to adhere strictly to official safety guidelines set by Dubai authorities. He emphasised that maintaining these standards is crucial for keeping Dubai a safe global centre for diamond trade.
