Dubai Municipality Unveils World's First Smart Self-Service Lab For Testing Precious Metal Purity
Dubai Central Laboratory, a division of Dubai Municipality, has introduced the Smart Gold and Jewellery Testing Lab. This is the first self-service device globally for testing the purity of precious metals like gold, silver, and platinum. The initiative bolsters Dubai's position as a central hub for the trade of these valuable commodities.
The device operates autonomously, employing advanced spectroscopic analysis, X-ray technology, and artificial intelligence (AI) to provide highly accurate results in less than a minute. It was unveiled at GITEX Global 2025 through a collaboration between Dubai Central Laboratory and Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group, which includes key industry players.

Dr. Naseem Mohammed Rafi, Acting CEO of the Environment, Health and Safety Agency at Dubai Municipality, stated that the device was developed specifically for Dubai Municipality. A specialised technical team from Dubai Central Laboratory supervised its creation. "We incorporated the latest advanced technologies to create a transformative leap in the way precious metals are tested and verified," she said.
This partnership highlights both organisations' dedication to supporting Dubai’s innovation goals by creating smart solutions that enhance customer experiences while aligning with global market trends. It also furthers the emirate’s efforts to use advanced technologies for community and economic benefits.
Hind Mahmoud Ahmed, Director of the Dubai Central Laboratory Department at Dubai Municipality, highlighted ongoing efforts to develop smart solutions in line with Dubai’s future vision. She noted that creating this self-service device involved strategic criteria ensuring success and reliability through technical precision and seamless digital integration.
"We prioritised elevating the customer experience and ease of use," Ahmed explained. The device is designed to operate safely without human intervention and features intelligent design elements for rapid emergency response. It also offers advanced traceability and reliability with remote performance monitoring capabilities.
Strategic Rollout Across Key Locations
The first version of this precious metal testing device will be installed at Deira's Gold Souk as part of a phased rollout across strategic locations in the emirate. This initiative aims to build an integrated testing ecosystem that strengthens Dubai's gold and jewellery sector.
Dr. Rafi emphasised their commitment to adopting cutting-edge technologies and AI to improve operations for residents, visitors, and businesses. "Our goal is to ensure Dubai’s laboratory services remain among the most efficient worldwide," she added.
This innovative solution reflects Dubai's ongoing drive to harness advanced technologies for community benefit while reinforcing its role as a leading gateway for international precious metals trade.
