Dubai's Initiative To Strengthen Local Agriculture With Homegrown Produce Competition
Dubai Municipality has unveiled the 'Dubai’s Best Homegrown Produce Competition', a strategic initiative under the Dubai Farms program aimed at bolstering local agriculture and enhancing food security in Dubai. This competition is designed to support productive citizen farmers by encouraging the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices and promoting local production. It aligns with the Dubai Social Agenda 33, focusing on empowering citizens, boosting their economic contributions, and fostering self-sufficiency and independence.
The competition's primary goal is to cultivate a culture of productive agriculture within the emirate, emphasizing environmental sustainability and family self-sufficiency in agricultural production. It also seeks to elevate community awareness about modern agricultural methods and techniques. With a total prize pool of AED100,000, the competition will award AED50,000 to the first-place winner, AED30,000 to the second, and AED20,000 to the third. Winners will also receive the 'Medal of Dubai’s Best Homegrown Produce', to be prominently displayed in their gardens. The announcement of the winners is scheduled for May 2024.

Eng. Muhammad Abdul Rahman Al-Awadi, Director of Agriculture Department at Dubai Municipality, highlighted the initiative's role in supporting sustainable local agriculture and contributing to food security and environmental resource sustainability. This initiative aligns with both the National Food Security Strategy and Dubai Food Security Strategy goals, aiming to enhance domestic production while reducing food loss and waste.
Registration for the competition is open for a month via Dubai Municipality's official website. Eligibility extends to all homeowners or leaseholders with home gardens, excluding farmland owners and members of certain committees. The competition's assessment criteria focus on environmental sustainability, including the use of organic fertilisers, water and electricity conservation, solar energy usage, advanced irrigation systems, plant diversity, and innovative gardening ideas.
Dubai Municipality's commitment extends beyond this competition. Through the Dubai Farms Program, it offers a range of services to support national farmers. These include agricultural extension services, pest control, laboratory tests, competitive pricing for supplies and machinery, and strategic planning for Dubai's agricultural production.
This initiative not only aims to enhance Dubai's food security but also contributes to the emirate's vision of becoming a leading destination that harmoniously blends aesthetic appeal with environmental and food sustainability. By encouraging citizens to engage in small-scale domestic agriculture, Dubai Municipality hopes to improve societal well-being and happiness through increased quality of life.
