Dubai Unveils Its First PhD Programme In Artificial Intelligence During AI Week 2025

The University of Birmingham Dubai has introduced Dubai's first PhD programme in Artificial Intelligence during the Dubai AI Week 2025. This initiative, witnessed by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, aims to position Dubai as a global leader in AI. It aligns with the UAE National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031 and supports the emirate’s vision for innovation through education and research.

H.H. Sheikh Hamdan emphasised the significance of initiatives that enhance both local and international innovation ecosystems. He stated, "The academic sector plays a key role in shaping our future. Its contribution is crucial in preparing the talent and expertise required to drive Dubai’s future readiness." The programme will nurture talent in AI fields like smart city development, healthcare, sustainability, and mobility.

The PhD programme is designed to create a strong talent pool that will foster local innovation and ensure ethical AI development in the region. It is accredited by the Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the UAE Ministry of Education, highlighting its excellence in academics and research. Students will explore areas such as AI ethics, regulation, and trustworthy AI.

Omar Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, attended the launch event. The programme offers personalised academic supervision and advanced research training. Students will have access to AI labs, incubators, and government-led innovation initiatives to enhance their learning experience.

Running from 21st to 25th April, Dubai AI Week 2025 is organised by the Dubai Centre for Artificial Intelligence under H.H. Sheikh Hamdan's patronage. The event brings together international experts, entrepreneurs, policymakers, regulators, investors, and innovators from startups to tech giants to promote global AI innovation.

This initiative reflects the UAE’s dedication to equipping future generations with essential skills for leadership in the AI era. It collaborates with the UAE National Program for Artificial Intelligence to empower students with knowledge needed for advancements in artificial intelligence.

The new PhD programme covers diverse streams including medicine and healthcare applications of AI, natural language processing, computer vision, among others. This comprehensive curriculum aims to prepare students for significant contributions to Dubai's digital transformation journey.

The launch marks a pivotal step towards achieving Dubai’s long-term goals of becoming an innovative hub through advanced education and research initiatives focused on artificial intelligence.
