Dubai Electronic Security Centre Launches Scan Smart Campaign To Combat QR Code Scams And Enhance Cybersecurity Awareness

The Dubai Electronic Security Centre (DESC) has introduced the "Scan Smart" campaign, coinciding with Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Running from 24th to 30th October 2025, this initiative aims to educate citizens about cybersecurity and protect businesses from QR code-related threats. As QR codes become more common in daily transactions, the risk of malicious codes increases, posing a significant cybersecurity challenge.

Threat actors can exploit public QR codes by altering them, potentially leading users to phishing sites or installing malware. In the first half of 2025 alone, over 4.2 million attempts to forge QR codes were detected globally. This highlights the urgent need for awareness and safer scanning habits among users.

DESC Launches Scan Smart Campaign for Cyber Safety

The "Scan Smart" campaign seeks to equip individuals and businesses with tools to identify legitimate QR codes and report suspicious activity. Yousuf AlShaibani, Chief Executive at DESC, stated: "The ‘Scan Smart’ campaign reflects DESC’s commitment to empowering both businesses and the public with practical cybersecurity knowledge and tools to safeguard their digital interactions."

As part of the campaign, an interactive kiosk and engaging microsite have been launched to educate the public on safe QR code practices. The initiative also promotes RZAM, DESC’s free browser extension that detects suspicious websites appearing after scanning QR codes.

A network of food and beverage venues across Dubai is participating as "Scan Smart Partners." These venues display campaign-branded materials like stickers and table tents to encourage safe scanning habits. They offer free coffee and exclusive discounts as incentives for responsible digital behaviour.

The "Scan Smart Partner" label identifies venues actively supporting DESC’s community outreach efforts by integrating cybersecurity awareness into everyday environments. Displayed on items like cups or café walls, it signals that the venue is part of a city-wide initiative promoting safe digital habits.

Promoting Safe Scanning Practices

Customers are encouraged to verify QR codes before scanning them to prevent exposure to fraudulent content. Reporting any suspicious codes through appropriate channels supports broader monitoring efforts and timely alerts.

This collaboration transforms cafés into micro-awareness hubs where digital safety meets daily life. By displaying the "Scan Smart Partner" badge, participating businesses demonstrate social responsibility and align with Dubai’s vision of a safer cyberspace.

Aligning With National Initiatives

The campaign reinforces DESC’s ongoing commitment to protecting Dubai's digital ecosystem while promoting a cyber-aware community. It aligns with the UAE’s Year of Community by bringing people together and encouraging safer online practices.
