Dubai Duty Free Sets New Record With AED 646.23 Million In August Sales Growth

Dubai Duty Free achieved record sales in August, reaching AED646.23 million (US$177 million). This surpassed the previous high of AED588.13 million (US$161 million) set in August 2018, marking a nearly 10% increase. Compared to last year, sales rose by 15% from AED561.53 million (US$153.84 million). Daily sales averaged AED20.8 million (US$5.70 million), with about 275,000 passengers daily.

Dubai Duty Free's Managing Director, Ramesh Cidambi, expressed satisfaction with the results: "It is a great sales achievement and August’s record adds to the impressive streak of records sets earlier this year in January, February, April, May, and July." He noted that sales growth outpaced passenger numbers by approximately 9%, showcasing the team's exceptional efforts.

Dubai Duty Free Achieves Record August Sales

The airport retailer experienced an increase in spend per passenger by almost US$4 and a penetration rate half a percentage point higher than last August. Year-to-date sales reached AED5.4 billion (US$1.48 billion), up 6.93% from last year, reflecting Dubai Duty Free's effective product strategy and premium retail experience.

Confectionery led category growth with a 68.90% rise in sales, followed by Gold at over 28.55%. Perfumes increased by 13.13%, while Cigarettes and Tobacco saw an 11.05% boost. Millennium Millionaire ticket sales grew by 33.70%, Watches by 17.70%, Precious Jewellery by 24.17%, Cosmetics by 8.91%, Liquor nearly 3%, and Electronics by 2.34%. The Top 10 categories collectively grew by 15%, even excluding Confectionery, they rose by 10.44%.

Luxury boutiques contributed significantly to success in August, particularly fashion boutiques in Terminal 3’s Concourse A and B which grew by 10.86% compared to August last year. Cartier led with a remarkable growth of 29.33%. Average daily transactions increased to 254 from last year's 237, with transaction values rising to AED8,004 from AED7,748.

All major areas performed well compared to last August; Concourses A and B each saw a rise of 17%, Concourse C grew by 16.45%, and Concourse D increased by 7.91%. Terminal 2 Departures recorded a growth of 13.60%, while Al Maktoum International Airport experienced an impressive increase of 56.91%. Arrivals Shops also posted strong results with an increase of 11.72% despite competition at Terminal 3 Arrivals.

Geographical Growth and Future Plans

Passenger growth was notable across regions; those travelling to the U.S increased by 27.94%, Middle East passengers rose by 19.78%, Indian Sub-continent surged by 17%, Africa grew by 15.28%, Europe saw a rise of 13.46%, Australasia at 9.49%, Far East at 9.15% and Russian region at a modest increase of 3.26%. This performance underscores Dubai Duty Free’s global reach.

Looking forward, Dubai Duty Free plans to enhance its retail offerings further with new Louis Vuitton and Cartier boutiques opening soon in Concourse A this month to strengthen its luxury portfolio."The new Louis Vuitton boutique in Concourse A is expected to open later this week and will significantly elevate the fashion offering in Concourse A," stated Cidambi.

Additionally, refurbishment work is underway in Concourse A for a new ‘Gifts from Dubai’ concept store set to launch by December.
