Dubai Customs Launches Accredited Centre To Train Inspection Equipment Operators For Enhanced Border Security

Dubai Customs has launched the Accredited Center for Training Customs Inspection Equipment Operators, linking the move with World Customs Day on 26 January. The initiative is designed to raise inspection efficiency, support secure trade and strengthen community protection, while aligning with the World Customs Organization’s 2026 theme, "Customs protecting society through vigilance and commitment."

The centre’s core mission is to improve how inspectors use X-ray and other inspection technologies, so checks stay accurate while trade flows smoothly. By doing so, Dubai Customs seeks to balance strict border security with efficient cargo and passenger processing, supporting Dubai’s wider competitiveness as a global trading hub.

The training model combines classroom concepts, computer-based simulations and supervised field work to mirror real inspection tasks. Participants receive at least 30 hours of computer-based training that recreates operational environments using extensive image libraries. They then complete a minimum of 40 hours of guided on-site training to apply skills directly in live customs settings.

Key programme elements include structured assessments, formal licensing and periodic re-licensing to maintain standards. These steps are intended to keep inspectors’ technical skills current, ensure consistent decision-making at checkpoints and sustain overall operational readiness. The system is designed as a continuous cycle rather than one-off courses, supporting long-term workforce capability.

According to Dubai Customs, customs inspection remains a primary defence against smuggling and border threats. The new centre is expected to sharpen inspectors’ ability to operate X-ray screening equipment, allowing quicker processing without reducing detection accuracy.
