Dubai Culture Unveils 'Resonance' Installation To Enhance Public Art In Al Shindagha

The Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, in partnership with Alserkal Arts Foundation, has introduced a new art installation called Resonance. This piece is located in the Al Shindagha Historic Neighbourhood and is part of the Dubai Public Art Strategy. The initiative aims to offer unique artistic experiences that enhance Dubai's global reputation and transform the city into an open-air gallery.

Unveiled during the 13th Sikka Art & Design Festival, Resonance is curated by Munira Al Sayegh. The festival, organised by Dubai Culture under H.H. Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's patronage, supports emerging artists from the UAE and Gulf region. It provides a platform for these artists to showcase their work and enrich Dubai’s artistic landscape.

Dubai Culture Launches 'Resonance' Installation

Dr. Saeed Mubarak bin Kharbash, CEO of the Arts, Design and Literature Sector at Dubai Culture, highlighted public art's role in reflecting Dubai’s heritage and creative environment. He stated, "The Dubai Public Art Strategy serves as an inspiring platform to engage the creative community in supporting cultural and creative industries while empowering talent to leverage Dubai’s rich cultural and historical heritage in expressing their artistic visions."

The Resonance installation was created by graphic designer Maryam Namvar and architect Neda Salmanpour. It invites visitors into a sensory dialogue with both past and present through visual, auditory, and spatial engagement. The artwork consists of three metal panels that move with the wind, reflecting light and echoing the rhythms of the creek.

Munira Al Sayegh remarked on public art's accessibility, stating its importance for community narratives. She said, "Public art remains one of the most powerful forms of art as it becomes directly accessible to any public that is within its reach." This commitment by Dubai Culture and Alserkal Art Foundation is crucial for building shared future narratives.

Resonance draws inspiration from extensive research into Al Shindagha’s layered histories and contemporary realities. It reflects on water movement, trade, architecture, languages, and communities that have shaped life along its banks over time.

Cultural Significance of Resonance

The artists behind Resonance expressed their intent to capture the emotion of being in Al Shindagha through contemporary mediums. They aim for this piece to evoke thought and conversation while reinforcing memory and identity within its surroundings.

This installation is the first of three projects commissioned by Dubai Culture & Arts Authority and Alserkal Arts Foundation as part of a broader initiative to introduce thought-provoking art into public spaces across Dubai.

Through these projects, both institutions remain dedicated to nurturing artistic excellence among UAE-based practitioners. They also aim to maintain deeper connections between artists and the city itself.
