Dubai Central Laboratory Advances Public Health With AI-Based Legionella Detection

Dubai Central Laboratory (DCL), a key division of Dubai Municipality, has recently announced the adoption of a novel artificial intelligence (AI) technology. This innovation marks a significant milestone as it is the first in the region to accurately and sustainably detect Legionella pulmonary bacteria. This bacterium is known for causing severe respiratory infections. The AI technology not only identifies live bacteria colonies but also quantifies bacterial counts with 99 percent accuracy, significantly reducing the time needed for results due to lesser laboratory supply requirements.

Hind Mahmoud Ahmed, Director of DCL, highlighted the Municipality's dedication to enhancing its digital infrastructure and equipping its laboratories with advanced systems. This initiative aims to boost the efficiency of Dubai's health and safety framework. The introduction of this AI technology aligns with the Municipality's goal to adopt internationally recognized standards for laboratory and calibration certificates, thereby ensuring public health and safety.

The new method has received global accreditation from the European Water Testing Network and a certificate of recognition from AOAC International for its precision and rapid result production. Traditional methods typically take up to 14 days to identify Legionella bacteria, whereas this AI technology delivers results in just 48 hours.

Moreover, the Acting Director of DCL mentioned that the department conducts over 100,000 tests annually across various sectors including food, environmental water, and consumer products. These tests are crucial for maintaining the safety of goods in Dubai's markets. The laboratory's commitment extends to research and development studies for diverse microbiological examinations, ensuring readiness for different scenarios.

The introduction of this AI technology underpins DCL's efforts to prevent microbial contamination and disease transmission through commodities and products. DCL boasts several specialized laboratories such as Chemical Analysis Laboratory, Microbiological Analysis, Infrastructure and Construction Materials Laboratories, Metrology, and Electromechanical Devices. These facilities serve a wide range of sectors including food, health, industry, environment, as well as governmental and academic institutions.

Equipped with nearly 5,000 technology systems and devices, DCL provides comprehensive services including technical consultations, specialized training, as well as inspection and calibration services. This initiative ensures that residents enjoy high-quality living conditions by safeguarding public health through advanced technological integration in laboratory examinations.
