Drydocks World Wins Landmark Contract For World's Largest Floating LNG Facility Off Mexico's Coast

Drydocks World, a subsidiary of DP World, has secured a significant Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract from AMIGO LNG. This project involves creating the largest Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) liquefaction facility globally. The initiative includes transforming two LNG carriers into Floating Storage Units (FSUs) and constructing two new FLNG barges at Drydocks World's Dubai yard.

Once operational in late 2028, this four-vessel setup will offer over 4.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of liquefaction capacity. This surpasses any current floating LNG development worldwide. The facility is strategically located off Guaymas, Sonora on Mexico's west coast. It will receive natural gas from the US Permian Basin.

Drydocks World Secures Major LNG Contract

The facility's location enhances Mexico’s role in global energy supply by facilitating direct LNG exports to Asia and Latin America. Its position reduces shipping distances to Asia compared to US Gulf terminals, thereby lowering costs and emissions. This development opens a new LNG corridor crucial for global energy security.

AMIGO LNG is a joint venture between Texas-based Epcilon LNG LLC and Singapore-based LNG Alliance Pte Ltd. Capt. Rado Antolovic, CEO of Drydocks World, stated: "This contract represents a major milestone for Drydocks World and Dubai. With our expertise in complex offshore conversions and large-scale new builds, we are setting new global benchmarks for floating LNG solutions."

The EPC project will employ a modular build strategy to ensure precision fabrication and seamless system integration. This method allows for pre-commissioning in a controlled environment, ensuring high quality, shorter delivery times, reduced environmental impact, and reliable long-term performance.

Dr. Muthu Chezhian, CEO of LNG Alliance Pte Ltd., remarked: "By partnering with Drydocks World on the world’s largest FLNG facility, we are securing best-in-class quality, exceptional production capacity, and reliable long-term performance of this critical asset." He highlighted the benefits of FLNG solutions such as faster project schedules and rigorous testing.

Drydocks World's Expertise

Drydocks World has completed over 10 major LNG and FSRU conversion projects previously. Their experience in complex offshore conversions positions them well for this ambitious undertaking. The project also reinforces Dubai's status as a hub for advanced maritime engineering that supports global trade and energy transition.

This venture not only sets new standards for floating LNG solutions but also underscores the strategic importance of Dubai in maritime engineering advancements. As the world moves towards sustainable energy solutions, projects like these play a pivotal role in shaping future energy landscapes.
