DP World Launches Maritime Works For $1.2 Billion Port Of Ndayane In Senegal
The dredger Willem Van Rubroeck's arrival in Ndayane this month signifies the commencement of maritime operations for the $1.2 billion Port of Ndayane project. This development aims to position Senegal as a significant player in global trade. The vessel will excavate a 5 km-long shipping channel, a crucial step in constructing this modern, high-capacity port intended to enhance Senegal's trade infrastructure.
Phase 1 of the Port of Ndayane project includes an 840m quay and a 5 km channel designed to accommodate the world's largest container ships. This phase will enable the port to handle 1.2 million TEUs annually. Phase 2 plans to add an additional 410m quay, further establishing Ndayane as a prominent logistics hub in West Africa.

The Port of Ndayane builds on DP World's achievements at the Port of Dakar, which increased its capacity from 300,000 TEUs in 2008 to 800,000 TEUs by 2023. However, Dakar's location within a densely populated area restricts expansion, making Ndayane a strategic alternative to support Senegal's long-term trade and economic growth objectives.
DP World is partnering with British International Investment (BII), the UK's development finance agency, for this project. BII projects that the port will boost Senegal's GDP by 3% through enhanced trade flows, potentially adding $15 billion in trade value by 2035. During construction, over 1,800 jobs will be created, with operational support expected for 2.3 million jobs across Senegal.
Following discussions with Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, DP World Group Chairman and CEO Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem expressed commitment: "We believe in Senegal’s economic potential and fully support the government’s ambitions for the nation. The Port of Ndayane will elevate Senegal and impact trade across the African continent."
Future Prospects and Employment Opportunities
The Port of Ndayane is set to transform Senegal into a regional trade leader, unlocking new opportunities for economic growth and global connectivity. Beyond the port itself, DP World plans to develop an economic zone near Blaise Diagne International Airport, expected to generate more employment than the port alone.
Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem also highlighted: "We are proud of our achievements with the Port of Dakar, and Ndayane marks the next level—positioning Senegal as a key trade hub for the region." This initiative underscores DP World's long-term commitment to enhancing Senegal's economic landscape.
