DoE Launches Foresight Reports Addressing Future Trends In Energy Sector Innovations
The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) has introduced a series of Foresight Reports. These reports aim to address rapid changes in the energy sector. By adopting foresight practices, the department seeks to anticipate future trends and scenarios. This approach aligns with its institutional strategy, enabling informed decision-making to foster innovation, efficiency, and sustainability.
Four reports have been released by the department, each addressing crucial topics. The first report, "The Ammonia Economy – Ammonia-based Fuel and the Use of Ammonia for Energy Storage and Delivery," examines ammonia's potential in hydrogen energy production and sustainable technology transitions. It also outlines future trends and necessary steps for developing the ammonia economy.

The second report delves into "The Future of Water Sustainability through the Graphene Revolution." It investigates graphene-based technologies in water applications like desalination and purification. The report provides a framework for identifying trends to enhance water sustainability while outlining impacts and potential actions.
Another report, titled "The Race to Harness Space Solar Power – New Horizons for Energy," evaluates space solar power technology's strategic feasibility. It aligns with the UAE’s renewable energy goals and envisions a sustainable future without carbon emissions. This report identifies development trends in space solar power technology.
The fourth report focuses on "The Future of Enhancing Renewable Energy through Smart Grids and Artificial Intelligence." It highlights advancements in smart grid technologies within the UAE, their link to artificial intelligence, and their role in energy management. The report outlines future trends for these grids' development.
Dr. Shamma Al Malik, Director of Strategy Development at DoE, stated that these reports aim to inspire forward-looking visions of UAE leadership while addressing challenges like energy transition and water security. She noted that building a deep knowledge base helps ensure readiness for future challenges.
"The issuance of these four reports reaffirms the Department of Energy’s commitment to achieving an effective transformation in the energy sector by promoting the use of clean and renewable energy," Dr. Al Malik added. She emphasized that these reports will enhance Abu Dhabi’s leadership position in global energy transition efforts.
Collaborative Efforts for Sustainable Growth
Dr. Al Malik also highlighted the importance of collaboration with partners and stakeholders to deliver advanced solutions in clean energy fields. The department continues developing plans to accelerate national efforts towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 as part of the UAE’s strategic initiative.
The Foresight Reports serve as strategic tools guiding long-term goals while mitigating risks and seizing new opportunities. They provide systematic analysis of possible scenarios like technological advancements or policy shifts impacting the energy sector.
