Dnata Introduces Autonomous Vehicles To Transform Airport Operations At Dubai World Central

dnata has introduced autonomous vehicles at Dubai World Central - Al Maktoum International (DWC), enhancing ramp operations with advanced technology. The fleet includes six electric tractors, the EZTow model by TractEasy. These vehicles transport baggage between terminals and aircraft, replacing human drivers who previously worked under tight schedules.

The deployment of these autonomous vehicles marks a significant shift in airside operations. By towing up to four baggage containers at speeds of 15 km/h along pre-set paths, they streamline processes and reduce human error risks. This change allows staff to focus on more complex tasks, improving turnaround times and safety.

The project, costing AED6 million (US$1.6 million), begins with Level 3 autonomy, requiring minimal human oversight. By early 2026, dnata plans to upgrade to Level 4 autonomy, which will enable full self-driving capabilities within controlled environments. This progression is part of a broader strategy to enhance operational efficiency.

Collaboration among dnata, TractEasy, Dubai Airports, and the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has been crucial in developing a regulatory framework for autonomous vehicle use in airside settings. This framework is essential as global standards for such operations are still largely undefined.

Beyond daily operations, dnata aims to use this initiative as a testing ground for refining autonomous ground handling models. The goal is to determine the best strategies for wider implementation as DWC expands into what could become the largest airport globally, accommodating up to 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of cargo annually.

Jaffar Dawood, Divisional Senior Vice President for UAE Airport Operations at dnata, stated: "While autonomous vehicles have largely been limited to trials, this deployment brings the technology into regular, day-to-day operations. As global travel continues to rebound and operational demands increase, automation could be key to building smarter, safer and more resilient infrastructure."
