DMCC And AQUA-INDEX To Launch First Water-Backed Digital Token For Global Trading
DMCC, a prominent international business district in Dubai, has partnered with AQUA-INDEX, a leader in water commodities trading. This collaboration aims to introduce the first digital asset token backed by freshwater resources. This initiative seeks to transform the global water trade by offering a new way to value and manage water.
The innovative token is supported by verified drinking-quality water stored in reservoirs worldwide. It allows investors, traders, and the public to trade and hold fresh water as a commodity. This partnership merges financial innovation with expertise in water markets, aiming to enhance liquidity and transparency in global water supply chains.

AQUA-INDEX will leverage DMCC’s extensive network, top-notch services, and advanced infrastructure for effective trading of water assets. The partnership will also enhance knowledge exchange on global water usage and pricing. DMCC will not directly own or manage the token but will facilitate access to essential trading products for its members.
Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman and CEO of DMCC, stated that nearly half of the world's population faces water scarcity annually. He emphasised the need for a mature market for this critical resource. "We are proud to partner with AQUA-INDEX to drive a transparent, neutral, and legally coherent structure," he said.
The collaboration supports DMCC's efforts to establish the DMCC Water Centre in Dubai. This centre aims to position Dubai as a hub for water trading and innovation. It brings together WaterTech innovators, logistics providers, and commodity traders under one platform.
Yaacov Shirazi, Chairman of AQUA INDEX, highlighted the significance of pricing water based on its usage and quality. He noted that turning water into an asset class for financial trading could revolutionise the world economy by improving management practices.
The introduction of a water-backed token is crucial for DMCC’s Water Centre strategy. It offers new tools for hedging risk and financing infrastructure in regions facing water stress. The initiative aims to ensure that transported commodities can reach areas in need effectively.
AQUA-INDEX's patented innovations combined with DMCC's resources promise significant advancements in managing global water ecosystems. The collaboration is expected to create new levels of management that prevent scarcity and contamination while enhancing infrastructure capabilities globally.
