Digital Innovation Spearheads Sustainable Solutions In Diamond Industry, Reveals DMCC Report

DMCC, the world’s leading free zone and Government of Dubai Authority on commodities trade, has unveiled its latest Future of Trade report. This special edition focuses on enhancing traceability in the global diamond supply chain. Titled ‘Provenance, Traceability and Technology,’ the report highlights the necessity for advanced technological solutions to uphold the integrity and sustainability of the diamond supply chain.

The report identifies several key technologies crucial for addressing current challenges. These include blockchain, AI, synthetic DNA, laser microjets, QR codes, and physical tracers. These innovations are essential to tackle issues arising from shifting consumer behaviour, the increase in lab-grown diamonds, and G7 import restrictions.

Innovating Diamonds: DMCC's Tech Focus

The G7’s sanctions package against Russian diamonds includes a blockchain-enabled traceability system set to be implemented in September 2024. This has raised significant concerns within the industry about potential delays, additional costs, and regulatory overreach. To mitigate these issues and ensure a consistent global regulatory approach, DMCC’s report advocates for creating a working group on Traceability and Transparency.

This proposed working group would aim to establish standards on "Minimum Viable Levels of Traceability and Transparency." By leveraging industry expertise, this body would support efforts to advance and scale up the best available technologies for mass adoption while preserving industry self-determination in the long term.

The publication follows DMCC’s "Provenance, Traceability and Technology Forum," held alongside the Kimberley Process Intersessional Meeting in May 2024. This forum brought together hundreds of leading diamond industry stakeholders in Dubai to discuss key challenges related to advancing traceability solutions.

Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Executive Chairman and CEO of DMCC, emphasised the importance of embracing technology in the diamond industry's evolution. He stated, "It is paramount that we collectively embrace technology and its increasingly critical role in the diamond industry's evolution and supply chain. By utilising AI, blockchain and laser micro-machining, the diamond industry must embrace the opportunities to enhance transparency while providing greater support to artisanal mining communities, both key objectives of the Kimberley Process."

Upcoming Events Highlighting Report Findings

The findings from this report will be discussed at the sixth edition of the Dubai Diamond Conference (DDC), scheduled for 11th November as part of DMCC’s "Dubai Diamond Week." The week will also feature the Kimberley Process Plenary from 12th to 15th November and the Jewellery, Gems & Technology (JGT) Dubai trade fair from 12th to 14th November.

This year’s DDC theme is "Thriving Under Pressure: Navigating the New Global Paradigms," reflecting the challenges and transformative opportunities facing the global diamond market. The timely publication of this report aims to provide valuable insights for the global community while sharing recommendations on safeguarding long-term integrity and sustainability in the diamond supply chain.

This special edition follows DMCC's most recent biennial flagship report launched in May 2024. That report outlined key drivers of global trade over the next decade.

As Dubai continues its compound annual growth rate of 11 percent in diamond trade over five years, these insights are expected to be instrumental for stakeholders worldwide.
