DEWA's Electricity Transmission Investments Surpass AED 7.6 Billion With New Substations Planned
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), announced that DEWA's electricity transmission network projects now surpass AED7.6 billion in value. During the first half of 2025, DEWA commissioned four 132 kV substations with a conversion capacity of 450 megavolt-amperes, costing AED725 million. These projects also included extending 228km of transmission cables.
Hussain Lootah, Executive Vice President of Transmission Power at DEWA, highlighted that the new substations cater to various areas. Two are located in Al Yalayis 5 to support citizens' housing projects, while others are in Hatta and Warsan 4. By mid-2025, DEWA's electricity transmission substations totaled 391, comprising 27 at 400 kV and 364 at 132 kV.

Currently, DEWA is constructing 49 new 132 kV substations and two additional 400 kV ones. The authority is seeking proposals from main contractors for implementing 11 new 132 kV transmission substations. Over the next three years, DEWA plans to issue tenders for over 57 more 132 kV substations and extend underground transmission cables by 160km.
DEWA has awarded contracts worth AED1.1 billion to build ten new 132 kV substations across Dubai. These include locations such as Al Barsha South 2, Business Bay, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Airport City, Nad Al Sheba 1, and Wadi Al Safa 5. Additionally, projects have been awarded to extend cables connecting these new substations to the main network.
The implementation and commissioning of these projects required over 4.5 million working hours using cutting-edge digital technologies approved internationally. This approach ensures efficiency and reliability in expanding Dubai's electricity infrastructure.
DEWA has also allocated AED288 million for extending a total length of 60.6km of 132 kV cables to integrate the new main substations into the primary electricity transmission network. This expansion aims to enhance connectivity and meet growing energy demands across Dubai.
These strategic initiatives reflect DEWA's commitment to advancing Dubai's energy infrastructure through significant investments in technology and expansion projects. The ongoing development aligns with the city's vision for sustainable growth and reliable energy supply.
