COP29 To Serve As A Pivotal Moment For Defining Future Climate Contributions, According To IRENA

Francesco La Camera, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), highlighted the significance of the upcoming 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29). He noted that this event is crucial for shaping future contributions and enhancing global ambitions. It will build on the progress made under the UAE's leadership during COP28.

During IRENA’s 28th Council meeting in Abu Dhabi, La Camera remarked, "We are heading towards COP29, and this is the last opportunity for member states to meet and achieve positive outcomes from this conference." This statement underscores the urgency of reaching agreements at COP29.

IRENA Highlights Importance of COP29 for Climate Goals

The 'UAE Consensus' established at COP28 provides a roadmap for achieving net-zero emissions by mid-century. La Camera expressed pride in IRENA's role as a co-custodian appointed by the COP28 Presidency to oversee progress. This consensus aims to triple renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency by 2030.

La Camera stressed that an investment of US$31.5 trillion is needed by 2030 in renewable energy, grids, resilience measures, and energy efficiency. He emphasised that annual investments in renewable energy must triple compared to 2023 levels to meet these targets.

The Director-General called for unity among nations at COP29 to boost climate finance and collectively raise ambitions. He urged countries to use this platform to advance the global energy transition with clear objectives.

La Camera confirmed that IRENA has started working with Brazil, which will host COP30. This collaboration aims to build on past achievements and ensure COP30 becomes another milestone in addressing climate change challenges and achieving net-zero emissions.

The focus remains on maintaining momentum from previous conferences while setting new targets for future climate action. The involvement of countries like Brazil signifies a continued commitment to tackling global environmental issues collaboratively.
