China's New Trade Corridor Hits $8.9 Billion, Expands Globally

The New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor (ILSTC), a pivotal logistics network traversing the western part of China, has shown remarkable growth, linking the Silk Road Economic Belt, the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road, and the Yangtze River Economic Belt. Recent data from the People's Daily highlights a significant uptick in activity along this corridor, with a 7 percent year-on-year increase in 2023, transporting 615,200 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). This surge has propelled the total value of goods moved to over 64.32 billion yuan ($8.9 billion), a 16 percent rise from the previous year. The ILSTC's expansion has reached 490 ports in 120 countries and regions, handling more than 1,100 types of goods.

At the heart of this bustling trade route is the Guoyuan Port in Liangjiang New Area, Chongqing municipality, reflecting the corridor's vital role in global logistics. By December 2023, the initiative had established 42 national logistics hubs across various provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions along its path. Notably, 11 new national logistics hubs were inaugurated in 2023 alone, enhancing the corridor's logistical capabilities.

China Trade Corridor Expands

Institutional innovation has been key to improving the ILSTC's service efficiency. Significant strides have been made in customs procedures, with customs clearance times for imports and exports at Guangxi ports reduced by 73.2 percent and 98.01 percent respectively since 2017. The adoption of digital documentation is on the rise, with initiatives like the "one-document coverage mechanism" extending to Southeast Asian nations including Singapore, Vietnam, and Laos. This digital shift has notably cut costs by approximately 1,000 yuan per container.

The development of information exchange platforms is another area of rapid progress. Over 800,000 pieces of data concerning container and vessel movements have been shared with Singapore's port operator PSA. This collaboration extends China's reach into international supply chains, showcasing the ILSTC's role in enhancing global connectivity.

The ILSTC's swift expansion and continuous innovation in logistics and customs processes underscore China's growing integration with the international market. These developments not only boost China's economic growth but also reinforce its position as a key player in global trade logistics.
