Smart Technologies And 5G Network Spearhead China's Agricultural Modernisation Efforts

As China embarks on a transformative journey to modernise its agricultural sector, the integration of smart technologies and the deployment of the 5G network are playing pivotal roles. This initiative, as reported by China Central Television, aligns with the central authorities' emphasis on agriculture and rural development. This focus is evident in the designation of agriculture-related initiatives as a top priority during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025).

To propel agricultural modernisation forward, China has implemented a series of measures and pursued rural reform comprehensively in recent years, achieving significant breakthroughs in key areas. The construction of agricultural infrastructure has been strengthened, with over one billion mu (about 66.67 million hectares) of high-standard farmland developed. This development has boosted grain production capacity by 10 percent to 20 percent per mu.

The expansion of rural roads is another achievement, with the total mileage reaching 4.6 million km. All qualified towns and villages now boast hardened roads, and more than 80 percent of administrative villages have access to 5G networks. This technological advancement underscores the importance of scientific innovation in driving agricultural modernisation. The contribution rate of agricultural science and technology progress has surpassed 63 percent, with the self-sufficiency rate of crop sources exceeding 95 percent.

The adoption of modern science and technology has enhanced traditional agriculture, making it more efficient and improving production methods. The mechanisation rate in crop plowing, planting, and harvesting increased from 67.2 percent in 2017 to 73 percent in 2022. This technological advancement has contributed to China securing a grain harvest of over 650 million tonnes for the ninth consecutive year in 2023.

Furthermore, China is advancing the construction of a modern agricultural industrial system. Currently, there are 289,000 village-level comprehensive delivery and logistics service stations and 75,000 refrigeration and fresh-keeping facilities in production areas across the country. These developments ensure that fresh agricultural produce can reach larger markets more quickly.

The integration of smart technologies and the extensive deployment of the 5G network are reshaping China's agricultural landscape. By prioritising agriculture and rural development, China is not only enhancing its food security but also contributing significantly to ecosystem preservation and green agricultural development.
