Now Booking A Careem Ride In Saudi Arabia Can Actually Help Save The Planet

In a significant move towards sustainable transportation, Careem has introduced an Eco-friendly ride option in Saudi Arabia, in partnership with CarbonSifr, a leading climate-tech firm participating in the Sedrah Program under Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA).

This initiative, supported by the Transport General Authority (TGA) and MEWA's Sedrah Program, aligns with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 and its environmental goals, marking a key milestone in the nation's journey towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting eco-friendly transportation solutions.

Sustainable Rides Launched in Saudi Arabia

The launch of this new service in Riyadh allows residents to choose Eco-friendly rides via the Careem app, offering the same level of reliability and convenience as traditional rides but with the added benefit of contributing to carbon offset efforts.

Residents in Riyadh can easily access this Eco-friendly ride option by downloading the Careem app and selecting it under Ride options, demonstrating a seamless integration of technology and sustainability. This initiative not only reflects a significant step towards achieving Saudi Arabia's environmental objectives but also sets a precedent for innovative partnerships between the public sector, private companies, and tech startups in driving sustainable development.

Specifically, these efforts are channeled through MEWA's tree planting program, powered by Sedrah, demonstrating a tangible step towards enhancing local sustainability and combating climate change. This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to fostering a greener future through innovative solutions.

Saleh Ibrahim Al-Zuwayed, Director and spokesperson at Transport General Authority, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, "At the Transport General Authority, we are committed to fostering eco-friendly transport solutions that contribute to the Kingdom's Vision 2030 goals. We also recognize and congratulate impactful initiatives that showcase how innovation can support environmental objectives and our journey towards a more sustainable future."

This sentiment is echoed by Wael Ibrahim, GM of Careem Rides in KSA, Egypt & Bahrain, who highlighted the positive impact of such innovations on the communities they serve, emphasizing the role of these eco-friendly rides in reducing carbon footprints through MEWA's tree-planting initiatives across the Kingdom.

The initiative is part of a broader commitment by CarbonSifr to support environmental goals in Saudi Arabia. It focuses on reforestation in critical ecological zones, aiming to build long-term environmental resilience. By planting trees in MEWA-designated sites, the project directly contributes to local sustainability efforts, helping to mitigate the effects of climate change and preserve natural ecosystems.

Yazeed Al-Shammari, Sedrah Program Manager, praised CarbonSifr as a standout startup within the accelerator program, emphasizing the company's role in driving the transition to a low-carbon future through innovative partnerships like the one with Careem Rides.

He remarked, "By integrating technology to reduce emissions through everyday services like transportation, they contribute directly to our national sustainability and emission reduction goals. I'm incredibly proud to see our collaboration already bearing fruit, and I look forward to this initiative's positive impact on the Kingdom's environmental efforts."

Onur Elgun, CEO of CarbonSifr, expressed gratitude for the support from Careem Rides and the MEWA's Sedrah Program, acknowledging their pioneering spirit. He highlighted the simplicity and effectiveness of the initiative, saying, "Through our partnership with Careem Rides, we provide a simple, effective way for individuals to participate in Eco-Friendly behaviors by removing their CO2 emission impact while supporting MEWA's tree planting projects in Saudi Arabia."
