Bulgarian President Commends UAE's Role In Tackling Climate Change

President of Bulgaria, Rumen Radev, underscored the World Meteorological Organisation's (WMO) vital role in conducting climate research and data assessment. This contribution aids in formulating effective global policies to tackle climate challenges. His remarks came during a meeting with Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous, Director General of the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) and President of the WMO.

President Radev stressed the importance of international collaboration in addressing environmental issues. He noted Bulgaria's commitment to these global efforts. He highlighted that working together with organisations like the WMO and the IPCC is crucial for ensuring a sustainable future for upcoming generations.

During their discussion, President Radev praised the UAE for its significant contributions to climate change initiatives. He acknowledged the UAE's investments in clean technology and environmental projects, recognising its leadership in promoting sustainability globally. He emphasised that partnerships with the UAE are beneficial for exchanging knowledge and leveraging modern technologies developed by the UAE.

President Radev pointed out Bulgaria's hosting of the 61st Plenary Session of the IPCC as a significant opportunity to enhance international cooperation on climate change. This event gathers around 500 delegates from 150 member countries to share information and ideas on tackling climate challenges effectively. Hosting this event underscores Bulgaria's dedication to contributing to global scientific and environmental efforts.

The attendees agreed on the need for appropriate public policies and measures to raise awareness about climate risks due to increasing disasters like floods, droughts, and wildfires. They concurred that climate change affects all aspects of social and economic life, necessitating a rethinking of economic development visions and informing society about its consequences.

Enhancing Community Awareness

Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous highlighted good cooperation with Bulgarian scientists within WMO activities. He expressed readiness to strengthen joint commitments in this area, praising Bulgaria's efforts in promoting scientific research and international cooperation on climate change. He also stressed the importance of enhancing community awareness and adopting new technologies to address environmental challenges.

Future cooperation prospects were discussed, including participation in the upcoming 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in Baku, where President Radev will represent Bulgaria.

The Role of IPCC

The IPCC was established in 1988 by WMO and UNEP as an intergovernmental body assessing climate science. It provides periodic reports reflecting current scientific research on climate change impacts on environment, society, and economy. The IPCC relies on voluntary work from scientists worldwide to prepare comprehensive reports essential for policymakers globally.

The IPCC Plenary Sessions are held regularly to discuss reports and recommendations related to climate change. These sessions include representatives from 195 member countries who exchange information and ideas on addressing climate challenges effectively.

The 61st Plenary Session hosted by Bulgaria gathers approximately 500 delegates from 150 member countries, highlighting international cooperation's importance in adopting sustainable policies for a safe future for upcoming generations.

"Young people must be given the necessary knowledge already in the educational process," stated President Radev during his speech at the meeting.
