British Climate Tech Firm Levidian Sets Up In Abu Dhabi For Regional Growth

Levidian, a leading British climate technology company, has announced plans to significantly expand its operations by opening a new base in Abu Dhabi, aiming to cater to its increasing clientele in the Middle East. This strategic move follows a series of successful deals with prominent Middle Eastern entities such as Tadweer Group and ADNOC, as well as an investment from the sovereign wealth fund, Mubadala, during its Series A funding round in 2022.

The expansion is centred around Levidian's proprietary LOOP technology, which offers a novel approach to decarbonization by capturing carbon from methane gas before combustion. This process not only prevents the release of potent greenhouse gases but also converts methane into clean hydrogen and high-quality graphene. Graphene, renowned for its exceptional properties, is utilized across various industries to enhance product performance and operational efficiency.

Set to be operational by 2025, the company's first global Regional Delivery Centre (RDC) in Abu Dhabi is projected to generate approximately 250 jobs in the fields of research and development, as well as manufacturing. This initiative underscores Levidian's commitment to contributing to the region's economic development and environmental sustainability efforts.

Levidian CEO John Hartley expressed the company's ambitious vision for the Middle East, aiming for revenues surpassing $2 billion by 2030. Hartley emphasized the significant role of the upcoming delivery centre, which will not only serve as a pivotal hub for the Middle East and North Africa but also symbolize Abu Dhabi's central position in Levidian's regional strategy. According to Hartley, the innovative use of LOOP technology to convert methane into valuable resources marks a crucial step towards reconciling economic objectives with environmental preservation, facilitating a smoother transition to a low-carbon future.

Levidian's mission to decarbonize the world's most carbon-intensive industries is underpinned by its LOOP technology, capable of transforming methane into clean hydrogen and net-zero graphene. This technology offers a versatile solution that can be integrated with existing infrastructure across various locations and industries, demonstrating its potential for widespread adoption.

Among Levidian's notable collaborations is its partnership with ADNOC and Baker Hughes, focusing on the deployment of LOOP technology to decarbonize gas processing. This initiative represents the first application of LOOP technology in a gas facility, with the graphene produced slated for industrial application research within the UAE. Additionally, Levidian is engaged in a pioneering pilot project with Tadweer to address methane emissions from one of Abu Dhabi's largest landfill sites, expected to reduce emissions by approximately 40%.

Levidian also boasts a fully operational LOOP unit at Khalifa University's RIC-2D centre, located at the Arzanah Complex within the university's Sas Al Nakhl (SAN) Campus in Abu Dhabi. This presence not only highlights the company's technological prowess but also its commitment to advancing environmental sustainability and carbon reduction efforts in the region.
