Borouge Pledges To Achieve Net Zero In Operations By 2045, Enhancing Sustainability

In a significant stride towards environmental stewardship, Borouge Plc, a prominent petrochemicals entity renowned for its innovative polyolefins solutions, has pledged to attain net zero carbon emissions across its scope 1 and 2 by the year 2045. This ambitious commitment aligns with the United Arab Emirates' (UAE) broader sustainability objectives, reinforcing the nation's position as a pioneer in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region's climate action efforts. The UAE's Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative outlines a comprehensive roadmap for this endeavor, highlighting the country's dedication to combating climate change.

Borouge's approach to achieving this monumental goal involves setting interim targets aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity by 25 percent and energy intensity by 30 percent by the year 2030. The company is actively enhancing its energy efficiency programme and investigating new technologies and decarbonisation strategies, such as electrification and carbon capture advancements. Hazeem Sultan Al Suwaidi, CEO of Borouge, emphasized the company's commitment to mitigating climate change impacts through its products and operations. Borouge's products are increasingly utilized in sectors critical to sustainability, including renewable energy infrastructure, sustainable mobility, agriculture, and advanced packaging.

Borouge Targets Net Zero by 2045

Al Suwaidi also highlighted Borouge's dedication to promoting a circular economy and its accelerated timeline for achieving net zero by 2045. This initiative is not only a testament to Borouge's sustainability journey but also reflects the company's adherence to a rigorous governance framework that ensures transparency and accountability in measuring and disclosing progress.

Scope 1 emissions at Borouge pertain to GHG emissions from the production and processing of high-quality polyethylene and polypropylene. Scope 2 emissions are related to the company's energy consumption, including electricity, heating, and cooling used during production processes. In pursuit of its 2030 interim goals, Borouge has already made commendable progress by achieving a 30 percent reduction in emission intensity in 2023 compared to its 2018 baseline. This achievement not only surpasses the company's initial target for a 25 percent reduction by 2030 but also sets a precedent for other industry players in terms of environmental responsibility and sustainable operations.

The commitment of Borouge Plc to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2045 serves as a beacon of industrial responsibility in the face of global climate challenges. By aligning its operations with the UAE's sustainability goals and exploring innovative decarbonisation strategies, Borouge is actively contributing to a more sustainable future. The company's proactive measures and achievements underscore the vital role that industrial leaders can play in advancing environmental stewardship and combating climate change.
