Alia Al Mazrouei Meets With CEOs Of 20 Venture Capital Funds To Support UAE Startups
Alia Abdullah Al Mazrouei, the UAE's Minister of State for Entrepreneurship, recently convened a roundtable with 20 directors and CEOs from venture capital funds. The primary focus was to boost collaboration in supporting the UAE's entrepreneurial ecosystem and startup growth. This initiative aims to help startups expand into new economic sectors by providing them with essential skills to secure funding, partnerships, and investment opportunities.
Al Mazrouei emphasised the UAE's commitment to fostering a knowledge-based economy driven by SMEs and entrepreneurship. She stated: "The UAE sees SMEs and entrepreneurship as key drivers in building a knowledge-based, innovative, and competitive national economy. Therefore, we are continuing concerted efforts to enhance the country’s entrepreneurial environment, making it more appealing to startup owners, innovators, and talents, and to become a leading hub for entrepreneurship by the next decade, in line with the goals of the national agenda for entrepreneurship and SMEs."

The meeting included discussions on enhancing cooperation between the Ministry of Economy and venture capital funds. Al Mazrouei explored ways to develop partnerships that support startup growth, encouraging innovation and creativity. The directors and CEOs shared their future plans for business growth within the UAE.
During this gathering, Al Mazrouei highlighted the UAE's favourable conditions for investors and venture capitalists. According to a Magnitt report, the UAE led MENA in venture capital deals during H1 2024. It ranked second in terms of investment value attracted by emerging capital markets.
The Minister reviewed indicators underscoring SMEs' role in bolstering the national economy. SMEs make up 95% of all companies in the UAE and employ nearly 86% of the private sector workforce. This sector significantly contributes to job creation and employment opportunities across the nation.
Al Mazrouei noted that engaging with venture capital funds is part of broader efforts to enhance SME growth. She added: "The meeting with venture capital funds concerned with supporting SMEs in the country forms part of these efforts and contributed to the exchange of experiences on best practices and policies in the sector, enhancing cooperation in driving SME growth and enabling their access to regional and global markets."
Future Prospects
The roundtable also served as a platform for exchanging insights on best practices within the sector. Attendees discussed policies that could drive SME growth further while enabling access to both regional and global markets.
This initiative aligns with national goals aimed at transforming the UAE into a leading hub for entrepreneurship over the next decade. By focusing on creating an attractive environment for startups, innovators, and talents, these efforts aim to position the country as a centre for entrepreneurial excellence.
