ALC And Amazon Alexa Collaborate To Broaden Accessibility Of Arabic Content Via Voice Assistant Services
The Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC) and Amazon Alexa have entered into a content licensing agreement. This collaboration aims to make ALC's Arabic-language content accessible through Alexa voice assistant services in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. The partnership emerged from the Congress of Arabic & Creative Industries (Congress ACI), which focuses on promoting Arabic creativity and cultural sectors.
Dr Ali bin Tamim, Chairman of the ALC, emphasised the importance of this partnership with Amazon Alexa. He stated that it marks a significant step in expanding the use of Arabic by leveraging technology and artificial intelligence. This initiative aims to position Arabic as a global language in culture, science, and innovation.

Amazon Alexa's involvement in Congress ACI 2024 laid the groundwork for this collaboration. It underscores Congress ACI's role in fostering partnerships that enhance the global presence of the Arabic language. The partnership will promote sustainable initiatives that amplify Arabic's influence worldwide.
The agreement includes two key digital initiatives from ALC: the Poetry Encyclopaedia and the Digital Lexicon. These resources will enrich Arabic digital content, making it more accessible to millions globally. Dr Tamim noted that this effort brings Arabic's vast treasures closer to users worldwide.
Dr Raf Fatani, Regional General Manager at Alexa, Amazon MENA, highlighted Amazon's commitment to preserving cultural heritage through voice technology. He said, "At Amazon, we believe in the power of voice technology to preserve and promote cultural heritage, while making daily interactions more natural and accessible."
The Digital Lexicon (Daleel Al Maany) is a comprehensive resource launched in 2021. It features common Arabic vocabulary used online and is regularly updated. This lexicon serves as a primary reference for both native speakers and learners across digital platforms.
Global Reach and Accessibility
The Poetry Encyclopedia is an open-source archive showcasing classical and modern Arabic poetry. It highlights Abu Dhabi's role as a cultural hub in the Arab region and beyond. This initiative underscores the richness of Arabic literature.
Under this agreement, Amazon Alexa will actively support ALC’s efforts to reach a global audience. The aim is to facilitate access for native speakers and learners worldwide, promoting wider use of Arabic.
This strategic collaboration aligns with Amazon’s vision of creating technology that respects cultural identity while offering practical utility. Dr Fatani added that integrating curated content into Alexa enhances experiences for Arabic-speaking customers globally.
The partnership strengthens ALC’s commitment to preserving and promoting the Arabic language across all platforms. By doing so, it ensures that audiences everywhere can appreciate its linguistic richness.
