Al Sidr Environmental Film Festival To Explore 'All Living Beings' From October 25 To 27, 2023

The Al Sidr Environmental Film Festival is set to take place from 25th to 27th October, focusing on the theme "All Living Beings." Organised by the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi in partnership with The Arts Centre at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), this year's event will delve into the complex connections between humans, wildlife, and ecosystems. The festival aims to highlight these vital relationships through a variety of films and discussions.

Dr. Nezar Andary, the artistic director of the festival, emphasised the importance of understanding our interconnectedness with the environment. "Human well-being is deeply intertwined with the environment, climate, and other species on our planet. This year, the theme of the festival ‘All Living Beings’ highlights the crucial interdependence among all of Earth's inhabitants. It underscores our responsibility as the more advanced species to safeguard these creatures and their habitats."

Al Sidr Film Festival Begins October 25, 2023

The festival will present a selection of outstanding environmental films and artistic works. It serves as a platform for engaging with Abu Dhabi's community on local environmental issues. Attendees can expect thought-provoking documentaries, narrative films, and panel discussions featuring experts in environmental science and filmmaking.

In addition to film screenings, Al Sidr will offer various activities designed to inspire action on environmental challenges. These include kayaking for conservation in collaboration with Emirates Wildlife – EWWF and a public panel with the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi at The Arts Centre at NYUAD.

A special road trip is planned to bring films directly to schools across Abu Dhabi. This initiative aims to engage students by inspiring them with stories about environmental issues. The festival's educational outreach aligns with its mission to foster awareness among younger generations.

The fourth edition of Al Sidr has partnered with Climate Tribe, a UAE-based collective led by H.H. Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan. Climate Tribe focuses on inspiring climate action through storytelling about Emirati and UAE residents' experiences.

National Agenda Alignment

Ahmed Baharoon, Executive Director of Environmental Information, Science and Awareness Department at EAD, noted that "The festival aligns closely with the UAE’s national agenda, particularly as the Year of Sustainability continues in 2024. It highlights the UAE's ongoing commitment to environmental preservation and its role as a leader in sustainable initiatives."

The festival also collaborates with Lebanon’s Reef Film Festival (REEF), an association that connects environmentalists, artists, and filmmakers. Both Climate Tribe and REEF have contributed films to enrich Al Sidr's offerings.

Exhibitions and Special Features

An exhibition titled "The Conservatory for Plant Kingdom Obesity" will be showcased at The Arts Centre at NYUAD. Created in collaboration with Camilla Singh and the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, it promises an engaging experience for attendees.

"Through the power of film and engaging activities," Dr. Andary concluded, "we strive to inspire audiences to connect with and address environmental challenges in new and meaningful ways." The festival seeks not only to entertain but also to educate its audience about pressing ecological issues.
