RTA Completes Al Khail Road Development Project In Dubai, Enhancing Traffic Flow

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has successfully completed the Al Khail Road Development Project. This project involved constructing five bridges totalling 3,300 metres and widening roads over 6,820 metres. These enhancements span seven locations along Al Khail Road, including Al Jaddaf, Business Bay, Zabeel, Meydan, Al Quoz 1, Ghadeer Al Tair, and Jumeirah Village Circle.

The project benefits approximately 1.5 million people by reducing travel time by 30 percent. It also increases the capacity of intersections and bridges to handle around 19,600 vehicles per hour. Traffic flow on Al Khail Road is improved, resolving overlapping issues at interchanges and ensuring smooth traffic movement.

RTA Completes Al Khail Road Project in Dubai

Al Khail Road is a vital arterial route in Dubai. It begins at Business Bay Crossing and extends to its junction with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. The road features five lanes in each direction, expanding to more than six lanes in certain areas. This development is part of strategic efforts to enhance road corridors parallel to Sheikh Zayed Road and Emirates Road.

To expedite construction, RTA adopted a new approach by awarding contracts to multiple companies. This strategy reduced the construction period from 18 months to just nine months—an 80 percent reduction. A workforce of 5,000 engineers and labourers was deployed daily, logging six million work hours using 650 machines and equipment.

In Zabeel, a 700-metre bridge was built between Oud Metha Street and Financial Centre Street intersections. It connects traffic from Zabeel Palace Street and Oud Metha Street to Al Khail Road towards Jebel Ali with a capacity of 4,800 vehicles per hour.

A 610-metre bridge with two lanes was constructed in Meydan between Al Meydan Road and Ras Al Khor Road intersections. This bridge connects traffic from Meydan Street to Al Khail Road towards Deira with a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour. Additionally, improvements were made to 1,550 metres of surface roads linking traffic from Al Khail Road towards Ras Al Khor Street.

In Al Quoz 1, a two-lane bridge spanning 650 metres was constructed between the intersections of Al Meydan Road and Al Waha Street. It connects traffic from Meydan Street to Al Khail Road towards Jebel Ali with a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour. Surface road improvements covered 2,170 metres connecting traffic from Al Khail Road to Al Waha Street and Latifa Bint Hamdan Street.

Additional Infrastructure Improvements

A two-lane bridge measuring 640 metres was built in Ghadeer Al Tair between the intersections of Al Meydan Road and Latifa bint Hamdan Street. It connects traffic from Latifa Bint Hamdan Street to Al Khail Road towards Deira with a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour. Surface road improvements spanned 1,350 metres linking traffic from Al Khail Road to Meydan Street.

In Jumeirah Village Circle, a two-lane bridge extending over 700 metres was constructed between Hessa Street and Al Khamila Street. This bridge connects traffic from Al Khail Road to Hessa Street with a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour. Surface road improvements over 900 metres connected traffic from Jumeirah Village Circle to Al Khail Road towards Deira.

Surface expansion works were conducted on Al Khail Road in Al Jaddaf by adding a new lane over 600 metres. This improvement enhances traffic flow towards Deira by increasing the road's capacity between Oud Metha Street and Financial Centre Street intersections by approximately 2,000 vehicles per hour.

At Business Bay's entrance on Al Khail Road, an extra lane spanning 435 metres was added for smoother flow into the area from the road towards Jebel Ali. This enhancement also improves traffic safety in that sector.
