Asian Paralympic Committee President Foresees AI As Key To Paralympic Sports Evolution

Majid Al Usaimi, President of the Asian Paralympic Committee and a member of the International Paralympic Committee's Governing Board, highlighted the growing importance of artificial intelligence (AI) in para sports. He mentioned that AI will be central to future plans and initiatives by the International Paralympic Committee.

Al Usaimi noted that AI would significantly impact medical classification in Paralympic competitions. It will also aid in developing sports equipment, ensuring fairness among all participants. He stated, "The costs of sports equipment for specific para sports can vary greatly depending on each athlete's abilities, which can lead to inequalities in competitions. AI can help promote fairness in this area."

AI to Revolutionize Paralympics

He further explained that the UAE could play a pivotal role in overseeing AI-related research or forums. These initiatives could be launched in collaboration with the International Paralympic Committee, the Ministry of Sports, and the General Sports Authority. This collaboration would provide fertile ground for technological advancements in the Paralympic Games.

Discussing a strategic plan set nine years ago in Abu Dhabi, Al Usaimi mentioned its aim to increase and develop Asian participation in the Paralympic Games. The plan has shown significant progress over the years.

He said, "Asian participation in Rio de Janeiro 2016 was around 19 percent of the total participants, rising to 22 percent in Tokyo 2020, and over 25 percent in Paris 2024. Additionally, many Asian countries have achieved positive results, with China leading the competition in its early days."

The strategic plan from 2015 aimed at boosting Asian involvement is yielding results. The percentage of Asian athletes has steadily increased across recent Paralympic Games.

Al Usaimi emphasised that AI could address disparities caused by varying costs of sports equipment tailored to athletes' abilities. This technology promises to level the playing field by promoting fairness.

The UAE's potential involvement underscores its trusted position within the International Paralympic Committee. By spearheading AI research and forums, it aims to drive technological innovation within para sports.

The increasing participation rates reflect successful efforts to enhance Asian representation at global events. This trend is expected to continue as more countries achieve notable results.

The integration of AI into para sports represents a significant shift towards ensuring equality and fairness for all athletes. The ongoing efforts highlight a commitment to leveraging technology for better outcomes.

This focus on AI aligns with broader goals to enhance competitiveness and inclusivity within para sports globally. The UAE's proactive stance positions it as a leader in this transformative journey.
