University Of Al Dhaid Partners With University Of Liverpool To Launch Veterinary Medicine Programme
H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has signed a cooperation agreement with the University of Liverpool. This partnership aims to establish a veterinary medicine programme at the University of Al Dhaid (UODH). The signing took place at the university's headquarters, marking a significant step in enhancing educational opportunities in the region.
The collaboration between the two universities is designed to leverage the expertise of the University of Liverpool. It will provide students with an enriched learning experience in veterinary medicine. The initiative was driven by Sharjah's Department of Agriculture and Livestock, which manages extensive pastures for local cattle, camels, and goats.
H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan highlighted that many institutions lack practical training facilities for agriculture and veterinary studies. In contrast, UODH offers wheat and corn fields, as well as cow, bird, and goat farms for hands-on student training. This infrastructure supports comprehensive education in these fields.
The Ruler of Sharjah emphasised the importance of developing animal wealth through support and treatment rather than mere aspirations. He noted that each pasture has a small veterinary clinic to address needs during droughts or disease outbreaks. The new colleges at UODH will further enhance this capacity.
Dr. Tim Jones, Chancellor of the University of Liverpool, expressed enthusiasm for this partnership. He stated, "This partnership is at the heart of what we strive to achieve at the University of Liverpool." The collaboration aligns with their mission to enhance learning and improve lives globally.
Dr. Jones also mentioned that their Veterinary School celebrated its 120th anniversary this year. It has gained recognition as one of the world's leading veterinary schools due to its innovative achievements and global impact.
Strategic Educational Goals
The agreement aims to integrate global standards with regional priorities in its curriculum development. The University of Liverpool will contribute significantly by creating state-of-the-art facilities and fostering a research ecosystem tailored to regional needs.
The Ruler of Sharjah expressed his satisfaction with the swift progress made by both universities in reaching this agreement. He personally oversaw communication efforts to ensure successful cooperation between these esteemed institutions.
Future Prospects
The collaboration is expected to benefit staff and students from both universities while addressing global challenges like antimicrobial resistance and climate change impacts on animal diseases. These areas are crucial for advancing human knowledge.
The signing ceremony was attended by notable figures including Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment; Dr. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah; Dr. Aisha Ahmed Bu Shlaibi, Chancellor of UODH; along with other academics and representatives from both universities.
This agreement marks a promising future for veterinary education in the UAE and beyond, opening doors for students from Gulf countries interested in agriculture and livestock studies at UODH.
