AD Ports Group Unveils New Maritime Sustainability Research Hub In Abu Dhabi
AD Ports Group has inaugurated The Maritime Sustainability Research Centre, Abu Dhabi (MSRCAD), a non-profit entity dedicated to collaborative research between industry, government, and academia. The centre focuses on sustainability and innovation within the maritime sector. The launch event saw participation from key government and maritime industry representatives.
The MSRCAD will be managed by Abu Dhabi Maritime Academy (ADMA), a leading academic institution for mariners. It operates under Maritime Hub Abu Dhabi, a platform designed to bridge the gap between public and private sectors, aiming to strengthen Abu Dhabi’s maritime industry. Located within ADMA’s premises, the centre will seek funding primarily from private sources to support academic institutions and start-ups in conducting applied and fundamental research.

The centre aims to disseminate knowledge among partners and stakeholders, address both short and long-term research needs, and provide research opportunities for graduate students. Key areas of focus include Marine Environment & Sustainability, Artificial Intelligence & Robotics, Maritime Cyber Security, Big Data, and Maritime Policies & Laws.
Captain Saif Al Mheiri, CEO of Abu Dhabi Maritime and Acting Chief Sustainability Officer at AD Ports Group, stated, "AD Ports Group is committed to supporting initiatives that further our sustainability targets. This collaboration between Maritime Hub Abu Dhabi and Abu Dhabi Maritime Academy to establish a centre dedicated to advancing research, particularly in environmental sustainability, resonates deeply with our organisational ethos."
He added that the launch of the MSRCAD is another step towards enhancing Abu Dhabi’s standing as a global maritime hub. Recently, Abu Dhabi climbed 10 places to reach number 22 in the Leading Maritime Cities of the world rankings.
Fostering Innovation and Talent
Dr. Yasser Al Wahedi, President of Abu Dhabi Maritime Academy, remarked, "Cultivating maritime talent and spearheading innovation is paramount within Abu Dhabi Maritime Academy. We already have a track record in extensive research into sustainable advancements. This research centre underlines our commitment to sustainable solutions with the potential to benefit both the maritime industry and the global community."
Role in Economic Growth
Investing in research and development is crucial for national advancement. The MSRCAD is poised to play a pivotal role in propelling the UAE forward on its path to prosperity. According to data from the OECD and the World Bank, leading economies allocate at least 1 percent of their GDP to research and development, highlighting the importance of such initiatives in driving innovation and economic growth.
Funding and Collaboration
The MSRCAD will operate similarly to a funding agency by releasing calls for proposals. Researchers across the UAE will be invited to submit project proposals in specific fields. This open invitation encourages collaboration and ensures that the centre remains at the forefront of advanced research in the maritime industry.
