Eco Sea Wall Panels Deployed In Abu Dhabi By AD Ports Group And Archireef
AD Ports Group, a prominent facilitator of global trade, logistics, and industry, in collaboration with Archireef, a leading nature-tech company, has recently announced the introduction of Eco Sea Wall Panels at two strategic locations in Abu Dhabi. These installations, situated at Al Aliah Ferry Terminal and Saadiyat Marina and Ferry Terminal, aim to rejuvenate marine biodiversity along shorelines impacted by development activities. Crafted from eco-friendly materials including oyster shell powder, these panels serve as a proof of concept at both Saadiyat Island and Al Aliah sites, in partnership with Abu Dhabi Maritime.
Abu Dhabi Maritime, operating under the umbrella of AD Ports Group and in cooperation with the Integrated Transport Centre – Department of Municipalities and Transport in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi (DMT), is committed to the expansion and ecological safeguarding of Abu Dhabi’s maritime domain. The innovative design of the Eco Sea Wall Panels introduces enhanced natural complexity to otherwise flat quay walls, thereby facilitating the return of intertidal marine life to these areas.

David Gatward, Chief Engineering and Technical Services Officer at AD Ports Group, highlighted the initiative as a key step towards bolstering marine ecosystems. This move aligns with AD Ports Group’s extensive environmental goals and its dedication to ecological conservation. Gatward also referenced AD Ports Group’s involvement in one of the largest coral relocation and conservation efforts at Khalifa Port as part of its environmental initiatives.
Deniz Tekerek, Chief Commercial Officer at Archireef and co-inventor of the Eco Sea Wall Panels, emphasized the company’s role as a 'reef-to-shore' entity focused on enhancing marine ecosystems beyond just coral reefs. Through the deployment of these panels, Archireef leverages its expertise in eco-engineering and marine science to benefit adjacent ecosystems.
The project gains financial backing from an AED100 million R&D fund initiated by ADQ in 2022. This fund is a component of ADQ Growth Lab, which embodies a collective of innovators across ADQ’s portfolio. It underscores the company’s commitment to fostering innovation and research & development. The fund aims at unlocking growth opportunities while promoting value creation and sustainability within key sectors of the UAE’s economy.
This collaborative effort between AD Ports Group and Archireef not only underscores the importance of preserving marine biodiversity but also showcases a proactive approach towards environmental stewardship. By integrating nature-based solutions into urban development projects, Abu Dhabi continues to set an example for sustainable urban coastal management.
