MoHESR Launches Academic-Industry Sabbatical Programme To Enhance University Collaboration

The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MoHESR) recently organised a roadshow to introduce the Academic-Industry Sabbatical Programme. This event included two workshops aimed at connecting higher education institutions (HEIs) with economic sectors. The initiative allows students and faculty to gain practical experience by working with potential employers, enhancing their readiness for the job market.

Dr. Faisal Alayyan, President and CEO of the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT), led the first workshop in Abu Dhabi. Dr. Khalid Askar, Director of Innovation and Scientific Research at MoHESR, conducted the second session in Dubai. These workshops attracted over 180 representatives from 22 HEIs, including university leaders and faculty members.

The workshops provided an overview of the Academic-Industry Sabbatical Programme's structure and its national implementation roadmap. Participants discussed universities' needs and shared feedback on the programme's design and implementation mechanisms. Additional sessions will be held for industrial sectors to gather more insights during this introductory phase.

This initiative aims to foster collaboration between HEIs and economic sectors by allowing students and faculty to take time off from their academic or professional duties. They can work with prospective employers in priority sectors, gaining valuable industry experience that enhances curriculum updates in line with evolving technologies.

By integrating real-world experiences into teaching methods, faculty members can keep educational programmes aligned with industry skills. This approach supports continuous curriculum updates in HEIs according to economic sector leaders' aspirations. The programme also aims to develop research and development (R&D) initiatives with practical applications.

Once implemented, the Academic-Industry Sabbatical Programme will offer high-quality training and employment opportunities for students. Faculty members will gain firsthand industry insights that can be incorporated into curricula, ensuring that educational programmes remain relevant to current industry demands.

The Ministry's efforts are part of a broader strategy to strengthen ties between academia and industry, ultimately benefiting both students and faculty members. By aligning educational programmes with industry needs, graduates will be better prepared for the workforce, contributing positively to economic growth.
