Drone-based Blood Sample Transport Pilot Launched In Abu Dhabi By PureLab And LODD

PureLab and LODD Autonomous are testing unmanned aerial vehicles to move blood samples across Abu Dhabi. The pilot links SEHA Sheikh Khalifa Medical City with PureLab’s headquarters, aiming to cut delivery times and improve reliability. The partners intend to show that drone-based transport can meet strict health regulations while operating daily. By shifting some movements from road to air, they aim to speed diagnostics, reduce delays, and support more responsive treatment decisions. Environmental impact is also a focus, with the project seeking lower emissions than traditional vehicle-based courier services.

The pilot sits within the Smart and Autonomous Vehicle Industries Cluster, a programme by Abu Dhabi Investment Office. The cluster aims to speed up adoption of intelligent mobility solutions across sectors. Data from this medical use case is expected to guide safety standards, operating rules, and future commercial frameworks for autonomous healthcare logistics using air transport.

LODD Autonomous provides next-generation unmanned aerial vehicles designed for medical cargo. The aircraft are configured to transport blood samples securely between SEHA Sheikh Khalifa Medical City and PureLab facilities. The system is intended to maintain sample integrity, meet regulatory requirements, and deliver predictable journey times even during peak road congestion in central Abu Dhabi.

The collaboration seeks to improve several performance measures at once. These include diagnostic turnaround times, operational efficiency, and reliability of sample handling. Faster laboratory access can shorten the period between collection and analysis.
