Abu Dhabi Introduces Healthcare Workforce Bioethics Guidelines To Elevate Sector Standards

The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) has introduced comprehensive Healthcare Workforce Bioethics Guidelines. This initiative aims to standardise ethical practices in the emirate's healthcare sector. The guidelines were developed in consultation with over 120 global experts and leaders in bioethics, ensuring they address complex ethical issues arising from advances in health and technology.

Dr. Noura Al Ghaithi, Under-Secretary of the DoH, highlighted the importance of these guidelines. She stated, "Abu Dhabi’s healthcare sector continues to grow at an exponential rate spearheaded by innovation. Our ethical standards must therefore reflect the dynamics of the market while considering the cultural values of the community we serve."

The guidelines provide a framework for responsibly adopting innovations such as artificial intelligence, genomics, and personalised medicine. This approach ensures that technological advancements enhance patient care while maintaining the integrity of the healthcare system. Additionally, they prepare the sector for atypical events, equipping it to handle emergencies effectively while adhering to strict ethical standards.

Dr. Rashed Obaid Al Suwaidi, Executive Director of Healthcare Workforce Planning Sector at DoH, also commented on the guidelines' significance. He said, "The establishment of a national guideline for bioethics is more relevant now than ever as the healthcare sector in the UAE continues to attract top talent from around the world."

The development of these guidelines involved collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) and Sharjah Health Authority (SHA). They build on MoHAP's 2017 Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct for Health Professionals. These guidelines aim to elevate Abu Dhabi's healthcare sector globally, aligning with national efforts to transition to a knowledge-based economy.

The guidelines address various ethical considerations in healthcare, including responsibilities towards community well-being, women’s health, mental healthcare, organ donation and transplant, medical tourism, clinical research, and innovative medicine. By raising awareness of patient rights and promoting ethical practices, they contribute to a more informed community.
