Abu Dhabi University Showcases Student Innovation At 12th Undergraduate Research And Innovation Competition

Abu Dhabi University (ADU) recently hosted the 12th Undergraduate Research and Innovation Competition (URIC) at its main campus in Abu Dhabi. Under the patronage of Sheikh Nahyan Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, the event took place on May 29. Sponsored by RTX for the third year, it underscores their dedication to STEM education and innovation in the UAE.

The competition attracted around 1,300 students from 105 universities across 14 countries, submitting 650 research projects. This highlights URIC's status as the largest undergraduate research platform in the GCC and MENA regions. Students showcased pioneering work in fields like AI, Biomedical Engineering, Cybersecurity, Finance, and Renewable Energy.

ADU Celebrates Innovation at URIC 2023

Professor Ghassan Aouad, Chancellor of ADU, expressed pride in the event's success. He stated: "URIC continues to shine a spotlight on the ingenuity and research excellence of our youth. At ADU, we are deeply committed to fostering a culture of discovery that empowers students to drive meaningful change." The competition bridges academia with real-world impact.

Professor Montasir Qasymeh highlighted the involvement of startup companies and stakeholders such as government agencies and venture capital firms. He noted that students gained valuable experience in innovation and entrepreneurship. This exposure helps them develop competitive skills through practical engagement.

Now in its twelfth year, URIC is integral to ADU's mission of promoting youth-driven research and entrepreneurship. It aligns with the UAE’s vision for empowering talent and fostering knowledge creation. In 2024, nearly 600 submissions were received from 1,400 students representing 78 universities across 16 countries.

The hybrid format of URIC allows it to expand globally while providing a dynamic platform for student collaboration and leadership. The event celebrates diverse projects that reflect the depth of undergraduate innovation across various disciplines.

Professor Aouad acknowledged RTX's role in supporting URIC: "RTX's sustained partnership with URIC has been invaluable in providing students with the resources and opportunities to translate their innovative ideas into tangible solutions." Their involvement aids in developing a skilled workforce ready for future challenges.

The competition not only showcases student talent but also involves faculty mentors, judges, and strategic partners who contribute significantly each year. Professor Aouad expressed gratitude towards these contributors for their role in bringing URIC to life annually.

URIC remains a cornerstone of ADU’s efforts to champion research excellence among young innovators. It supports the UAE’s goal of building a knowledge-based economy by nurturing future leaders capable of driving sustainable development.
