The collaboration between the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) and Abu Dhabi Energy Services (ADES), a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), has culminated in the successful completion of a notable building retrofit project.

This initiative has seen the transformation of seven esteemed buildings, including cultural and heritage sites like Al Jahili Fort, Al Raha Beach Theatre and Al Ain Oasis, achieving an impressive 29% improvement in energy efficiency annually.

Enhancing Sustainability Through Collaboration

The project is a significant stride towards the sustainability goals of Abu Dhabi and the UAE at large, focusing on reducing water and electricity consumption to minimize carbon emissions. The efforts by DCT Abu Dhabi and ADES exemplify a strong commitment to sustainable development, underscoring the importance of joint ventures in addressing environmental challenges and promoting the principles of a circular economy.

Preserving Cultural Heritage

Saood Abdulaziz Al Hosani, the Undersecretary of DCT Abu Dhabi, emphasised the project's role in protecting Abu Dhabi's cultural heritage for future generations. The retrofitting extends sustainability practices to the region's historic sites, ensuring the preservation and vitality of Abu Dhabi's urban cultural legacy. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to incorporate sustainability into the tourism ecosystem, highlighting the city's iconic structures.

A Testament to Sustainable Practices

Khalid Mohamed Al Qubaisi, Chief Executive Officer of ADES, highlighted the synergy between the two entities in advancing sustainability goals within Abu Dhabi. The project aligns with the Abu Dhabi Demand Side Management and Energy Rationalisation (DSM) Strategy 2030, reflecting a dedicated effort towards sustainable development within the emirate.

Aligning with Abu Dhabi's Climate Change Strategy

The retrofit project also aligns with the goals of the Abu Dhabi Climate Change Strategy, a comprehensive plan aimed at bolstering the emirate's environmental resilience.
