Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Centre Reports Significant Advances In Diabetes Management With UC-MSC Therapy

The Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Centre (ADSCC) has reported encouraging outcomes from a novel diabetes treatment. A 20-year-old Emirati with type 1 diabetes underwent therapy using umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSC). This innovative approach led to improved blood sugar levels and reduced diabetes antibodies, with positive changes noted within a month.

Dr. Maysoon Al Karam, Chief Medical Officer at ADSCC, remarked, "This milestone is a testament to ADSCC's commitment to developing innovative treatments for chronic conditions affecting millions around the world, such as diabetes. Our new innovative treatment using mesenchymal stem cells shows promising potential for improving diabetes management and reducing insulin dependency."

ADSCC s Breakthrough in Diabetes Treatment

The UC-MSCs used in this therapy were entirely produced in ADSCC's state-of-the-art laboratories. The treatment involved precise dosing of UC-MSCs through a two-hour intravenous infusion session. This process adhered to strict protocols established by ADSCC's multidisciplinary team of specialists, ensuring rigorous quality control and close medical supervision throughout.

Dr. Antonio Bencomo, General Manager at ADSCC Research Centre, stated, "Our ADSCC laboratory and research centre is fully equipped with advanced technology and expertise to isolate, expand, and cryopreserve umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) and other cellular products such as CAR-T cells, hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic stem cells."

The benefits of this treatment for managing type 1 diabetes are significant. Clinical observations revealed enhanced blood sugar control and reduced insulin requirements, suggesting improved pancreatic function. Importantly, no side effects were detected during the treatment, highlighting its strong safety profile.

Following the initial success, ADSCC continues to monitor the patient through regular check-ups. These assessments focus on HbA1c levels, insulin needs, and other crucial metabolic markers to ensure ongoing effectiveness of the therapy.

Future Prospects for Stem Cell Therapy

This successful intervention not only marks progress in UAE but also sets a precedent globally for managing diabetes. Plans are underway to extend this treatment to patients with type 2 diabetes soon. The expertise at ADSCC's GMP laboratories supports various applications of UC-MSCs across different medical conditions.

Dr. Al Karam further emphasized that this breakthrough positions Abu Dhabi as a leader in pioneering medical treatments within the region. The centre's commitment extends beyond diabetes management as they explore diverse applications of UC-MSCs.

This achievement underscores the potential of stem cell therapies in transforming chronic disease management worldwide. As research progresses, such treatments could offer new hope for patients struggling with long-term health challenges.
