Abu Dhabi Partners With NUOS To Establish Leading Alternative Protein Facility

Abu Dhabi has taken a significant leap forward in the alternative protein sector with the announcement of NUOS, a Swiss innovation and production company, commencing operations within the Emirate. This move signifies Abu Dhabi's commitment to becoming a global leader in sustainable food solutions. NUOS, renowned for its expertise in alternative protein production, will set up its headquarters and an innovation centre in Abu Dhabi, focusing on creating a state-of-the-art facility for alternative protein manufacturing.

The establishment of NUOS in Abu Dhabi is expected to harness the Emirate's strategic geographical position and rich resources, aiming to catalyse growth across Europe, North America, and the MENA region. Labelled as the world's most advanced facility of its kind, NUOS plans to address the pressing global climate crisis by disrupting the traditional food system, which heavily relies on animal products. This initiative directly responds to the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with the food industry being a major contributor.

Abu Dhabi NUOS Launch Protein Facility

Abu Dhabi's strategic initiative, led by the Department of Economic Development (ADDED) and the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), introduces AGWA, a cluster designed to champion novel food and water technologies. AGWA's mission aligns with the global demand for sustainable food solutions, focusing on increasing access to, and efficient utilisation of, water resources. It also aims to support local suppliers, promote exports, and foster a resilient global food supply chain.

NUOS's presence in Abu Dhabi is set to bridge the gap in the alternative protein market by offering high-quality, competitively priced meat alternatives. The company has expressed intentions to collaborate with local research and development institutes and universities to foster innovation and build local talent in sustainable food technologies.

Bjoern Witte, Chairman of NUOS, emphasized the importance of Abu Dhabi as a strategic partner in creating a global standard for the food industry. He highlighted the Emirate's vision, infrastructure, and commitment to long-term partnerships as key factors in accelerating the transition to a sustainable food system.

A Hub for Innovation and Sustainability

Badr Al-Olama, Director-General at ADIO, stressed that the development of an alternative protein production facility in Abu Dhabi signals a new era for the UAE and the wider region. He pointed out the immediate benefits to consumers and underscored Abu Dhabi's role as an influential player in sustainable food solutions.

AGWA is poised to build on Abu Dhabi's strengths in advanced food and water production methods, complemented by its substantial farming base. With over 24,000 farms, half of which are located in the Al Ain region, Abu Dhabi is already a significant player in the agricultural sector. ADIO's partnerships with innovative companies focusing on solutions for desert and arid climates further consolidate Abu Dhabi's position as a hub for sustainable food and water technologies.

The collaboration between NUOS and Abu Dhabi marks a pivotal moment in addressing the global food industry's impact on the environment. It represents a significant step towards achieving net-zero targets and ensuring food security through innovative and sustainable practices.
