Abu Dhabi Investment Office, GCAA, Abu Dhabi Mobility Unveil UAE's First Operational Vertiport At DRIFTx

In a significant move towards revolutionizing urban mobility, the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), in partnership with the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and Abu Dhabi Mobility (AD Mobility), has introduced the United Arab Emirates' first operational vertiport for electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOLs). This development was announced at DRIFTx, an international event dedicated to showcasing advancements in smart, autonomous, and sustainable urban mobility across various domains.

The temporary vertiport, adhering to the latest industry standards and regulations established by the GCAA, marks a pivotal step in Abu Dhabi's ambition to lead in the eVTOL sector by 2026. AD Mobility, under the guidance of the Department of Municipalities and Transport – Abu Dhabi (DMT), will oversee this futuristic air mobility initiative, ensuring compliance with GCAA regulations.

Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the GCAA, emphasized the importance of collaboration in fostering innovation while ensuring safety and regulatory adherence in this rapidly evolving sector. He highlighted DRIFTx's role in accelerating advanced air mobility's development within Abu Dhabi and beyond, facilitating a future where smart and sustainable urban air transportation becomes a reality.

The establishment of the world's first national regulation on vertiports by the UAE's GCAA last year has significantly contributed to advancing air mobility in the region. This regulation encompasses design, operations, and certification standards for vertiports, demonstrating a commitment to innovation coupled with safety and compliance.

Abdulla Al Marzouqi, Director General of AD Mobility, shared insights into the strategic placement of vertiports across Abu Dhabi. These facilities will not only enhance connectivity within major business and tourism hubs but also support the SAVI cluster centered in Masdar City. This initiative aims to provide an enabling environment for companies innovating in air, land, and sea mobility technologies.

Badr Al-Olama, Director General of ADIO, outlined the transformative potential of Abu Dhabi’s vertiport network. This network is expected to create substantial commercial opportunities for transport infrastructure companies, thereby driving economic development alongside technological progress. The partnership between ADIO and AD Mobility is crucial for establishing a robust infrastructure that integrates smart and autonomous vehicles into daily life.

ADIO has engaged with leading experts in the advanced air mobility sector during the inaugural Abu Dhabi Mobily Week. The discussions focused on leveraging Abu Dhabi’s public-private partnership (PPP) framework to develop a comprehensive vertiport infrastructure network. This framework has previously facilitated significant infrastructure projects, from educational campuses to energy-efficient street lighting replacements.

The announcement signals a new era for Abu Dhabi’s Smart and Autonomous Vehicle Industry (SAVI) cluster. It aims to kickstart the development of necessary infrastructure for operationalizing air taxis. SAVI provides access to a wide range of facilities including academia, sandboxes, R&D labs, testing and certification facilities, workshops, hangars, manufacturing facilities, and global logistics integration. This initiative has already attracted leading eVTOL companies like Archer Aviation and Joby Aviation.

This strategic move by ADIO, GCAA, and AD Mobility underscores Abu Dhabi's commitment to becoming a global leader in smart and sustainable urban mobility solutions. By fostering public-private partnerships and prioritizing safety and innovation, Abu Dhabi is well on its way to realizing its vision for an advanced air mobility ecosystem by 2026.
