ADDED And Hub71 Collaborate To Elevate Abu Dhabi’s Innovation Landscape

In a significant move to bolster the innovation ecosystem within Abu Dhabi, the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED) has partnered with Hub71, the capital's premier tech ecosystem. This collaboration aims to refine the regulatory environment for innovative products and services through the introduction of the Abu Dhabi regulatory sandbox programme. This initiative is set to foster innovation, cooperation, and regulatory experimentation by bringing together companies from key sectors such as Health Tech, Mobility, and AgriTech with regulatory authorities and policymakers.

Rashed Abdulkarim Al Blooshi, Undersecretary of ADDED, highlighted the partnership's potential to support companies at the brink of market entry with untested innovations. This strategic alliance is expected to attract businesses to Abu Dhabi, guide them towards suitable regulators, and provide essential growth support. The programme's regulatory framework will allow local and international companies within the priority clusters to test their innovations in real-world environments, preparing them for potential launches within the Emirate.

Boosting Abu Dhabi’s Tech Innovation

To streamline the process from innovation to market entry, COAD plans to enhance its service quality and efficiency. This includes reducing the time required for innovative solutions to progress from development stages to licensing. A coordination programme with various regulatory authorities will also be implemented to facilitate product launches.

The establishment of this regulatory framework marks a crucial step in reinforcing Abu Dhabi's status as a leading destination for innovation. It supports investment activities and fosters economic growth. In 2022, COAD introduced "Abu Dhabi Innovates", a framework designed to boost innovation across the Emirate by encouraging and incentivizing innovators.

Hala Al Ameri, Executive Director of COAD, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with Hub71, emphasizing its role in enhancing initiatives serving the Abu Dhabi Regulatory Sandbox Programme. This collaboration aims to streamline coordination among stakeholders in Abu Dhabi and simplify the product launch process.

Al Ameri further explained that within this experimental environment, companies could test their products and services in an organized manner for a specific period. Successful testing would allow these companies to introduce their solutions to the market under regulatory authority guidelines.

The launch of this programme is not just about fostering innovation but also about motivating individuals to transform their innovative ideas into tangible services and products. This initiative is expected to cultivate a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship within Abu Dhabi.

COAD's Takamul Programme, which has evaluated over 1,100 patent support applications, demonstrates a commitment to supporting inventors and fostering a culture of innovation in the UAE.

Ahmad Ali Alwan, CEO of Hub71, commented on the importance of a progressive regulatory environment for innovation. Through this partnership with COAD, Hub71 aims to enable startups to validate their solutions and establish product-market fit. Alwan highlighted Abu Dhabi's strategic position as a global hub for tech and innovation, expressing confidence that this collaboration will have a positive impact on the technology and innovation landscape.

The signing of this Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ADDED and Hub71 signifies a major milestone for Abu Dhabi. It positions the Emirate as an innovation hub and provides a supportive ecosystem for businesses aiming to thrive and innovate.
