Abu Dhabi Sets Global Agenda for Environmental Education, Sustainable Growth at WEEC2024
The 12th World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC2024) in Abu Dhabi has been a pivotal platform for the unveiling of the Abu Dhabi Roadmap. This global strategy is designed to enhance Environmental Education (EE) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), with the aim of addressing the Triple Planetary Crisis. Developed through collaboration with key stakeholders including UNESCO and UNEP, the roadmap underscores the necessity for urgent action to elevate EE and ESD in both national and global agendas.
At the heart of the Abu Dhabi Roadmap is the call for the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and smart technologies, alongside ethics and values, to achieve environmental objectives. It advocates for evaluative learning and the fusion of green skills with green jobs to propel sustainable development forward. Ahmed Baharoon, Executive Director at Environment Agency Abu Dhabi, emphasized the city's dedication to implementing this roadmap by participating in global initiatives and enhancing local programs.

Abu Dhabi's commitment extends to combating biodiversity loss through partnerships with organizations such as UNEP and IUCN, and establishing a Regional Centre of Expertise for Education for Sustainable Development. The roadmap has received a positive reception from stakeholders, highlighting the critical role of education in securing a sustainable future. The congress concluded with four days of discussions, knowledge exchange, and field trips showcasing Abu Dhabi's ecological and educational initiatives.
The Four Thematic Chairs of WEEC2024 summarized the event's outcomes, focusing on the identified challenges and collective objectives in environmental education. Looking ahead, it was announced that Perth, Australia will host the 13th World Environmental Education Congress, signaling ongoing progress in the field.
This initiative marks a significant step towards integrating environmental education more deeply into our global consciousness. By leveraging technology and fostering an ethical approach to development, the Abu Dhabi Roadmap sets a comprehensive path for addressing environmental challenges through education.
