Abu Dhabi Fund For Development Launches AED27.5 Million Housing Project In Somaliland
The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has launched a significant social housing initiative in Berbera, Somaliland. This project, worth AED27.5 million (around US$7.5 million), highlights the UAE's dedication to fostering sustainable growth in the region. It features 300 residential units across three categories to meet various family needs and includes essential infrastructure like water systems and roads.
The project also involves developing sewage systems, stormwater drainage, and green spaces. These efforts align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11, which seeks to make cities inclusive and sustainable by 2030. The initiative is part of ADFD's broader mission to improve living standards and provide safe housing.

Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director-General of ADFD, stated, "This project is a continuation of ADFD’s mission to support sustainable development across partner countries. Providing adequate housing is a cornerstone of community stability and economic advancement. We are proud to collaborate with the Government of Somaliland on this vital initiative, which not only provides quality homes for approximately 1,500 individuals but also generates new job opportunities and stimulates local economic activity. Together, these efforts will drive long-term social and economic benefits, contributing meaningfully to the region’s growth and resilience."
The inauguration was attended by Mohamed Aw-Ali Abdi, Vice-President of Somaliland, along with Dr. Abdullah AlNaqbi from the UAE Trade Office in Somaliland. Abdi expressed gratitude towards ADFD and the UAE for their ongoing support in development projects that enhance living conditions in Berbera through integrated housing solutions.
Abdi highlighted that the project's impact extends beyond housing by improving infrastructure and creating jobs. These developments are crucial for local economic growth and ensuring the city's sustainable progress. The initiative offers hundreds of families a secure environment to thrive.
ADFD's involvement in Somaliland's development agenda is significant, managing a UAE government grant of AED330 million. This funding supports strategic projects like the AED262 million restoration of the Berbera–Hargeisa highway. Additionally, it includes initiatives in energy and transport sectors aimed at strengthening infrastructure for sustainable regional growth.
ADFD's commitment to enhancing quality of life through such projects underscores its role in promoting long-term social and economic benefits in Somaliland. By providing essential services alongside housing, these efforts contribute significantly to regional resilience and prosperity.
