ADAFSA Wins WSIS Award For Excellence In Food Safety Digital Innovation
The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) has received the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Award. This accolade, given by the United Nations International Telecommunication Union (ITU), recognises ADAFSA's innovative Food Import and Export Management Information System (FIEMIS). The award ceremony took place at the ITU headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, on 30th May.
FIEMIS is a comprehensive system designed to streamline food import and export processes. It allows importers and exporters to track their requests and manage procedures for imported food products using ADAFSA's database. The system also offers a pre-arrival release service for imported food shipments, enhancing the efficiency of food trade through Abu Dhabi's ports.

The system enables users to complete seven electronic services provided by ADAFSA. These services include registering food importing companies, registering imported food products, making import requests, obtaining export certificates, acquiring food destruction certificates, requesting inspections for food shipments, and linking these to customs declaration requests. This coordination with the General Administration of Customs simplifies customs procedures for food shipments.
The WSIS Award highlights ADAFSA's commitment to developing digital infrastructure and leveraging technology to achieve its objectives. This recognition underscores ADAFSA's dedication to innovation and excellence in community service, ensuring food safety, and securing food supplies. "This award reflects our continuous efforts to achieve excellence and innovation in serving the community," said an ADAFSA spokesperson.
ADAFSA's achievements are part of its broader vision to foster sustainable growth in agriculture and food safety while protecting plant and animal health. These efforts contribute significantly to biosecurity and overall food security in the region.
The FIEMIS initiative not only facilitates smoother import-export operations but also enhances the attractiveness of using Abu Dhabi's ports for these activities. By providing a unified window for all related services, it simplifies processes for businesses involved in the food trade.
This award is one among many that ADAFSA has received as it strives towards its goal of creating a robust agricultural sector with sustainable growth. The authority continues to work on various projects aimed at improving biosecurity measures and ensuring a secure supply chain for food products.
ADAFSA's focus on digital solutions is evident through FIEMIS, which integrates multiple services into one platform. This integration helps reduce administrative burdens on businesses and speeds up the processing times for import-export activities.
In conclusion, ADAFSA's recognition at the WSIS Forum showcases its leadership in digital innovation within the agricultural sector. The FIEMIS system stands as a testament to their ongoing efforts to enhance efficiency, promote sustainability, and ensure food security in Abu Dhabi.
