Abilities Development Centre Organises 15th Sports Championship For People Of Determination In Abu Dhabi

The 15th Sports Championship for People of Determination took place at Al Jazira Sports Club in Abu Dhabi. Organised by the Abilities Development Centre under Sheikha Salama bint Tahnoon bin Mohammed Al Nahyan's patronage, the event aimed to empower individuals with special needs through sports. The theme was "The Challenge Kickoff," and it attracted a diverse audience, including board members, parents, school representatives, and businesswomen from the UAE.

Dr. Samira Salem Hirzallah, who founded and directs the Abilities Development Centre, praised the UAE's commitment to supporting people of determination. She highlighted the country's humanitarian efforts and leadership vision. Dr. Hirzallah stressed that such events promote social responsibility by encouraging participation in sports, helping individuals reach their full potential. She urged parents to involve their children in these activities for valuable experiences.

15th Sports Championship for People of Determination

Dr. Mohamed Fouda, a psychologist and educational supervisor at the centre, explained that this tournament is part of a 17-year awareness campaign. He noted that participants included those with autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disabilities, and Down syndrome. Dr. Fouda emphasised the positive impact of these activities on social, psychological, and behavioural aspects while advocating for increased awareness to nurture talents and creativity within this community.

The championship featured performances from Ashbal Al-Quds School students who demonstrated their skills and enthusiasm for inclusion through sports shows. Other schools also participated in similar displays during the event. Sponsors were acknowledged for their support, highlighting the collaborative effort behind the tournament's success.

A total of 37 centres and schools for people of determination across the UAE joined the competitions. Around 400 male and female students participated in various events like relay races, zigzag running, basketball, ball transfer, and shooting contests. The tournament welcomed 450 students from public and private schools as fans and supporters.

The competitions catered to different age groups ranging from six years old to those above 17 years old. Excitement built up among students as results were announced at the end of the tournament.

Celebrating Achievements

The winning teams were honoured at the conclusion of the event: First place went to Abilities Development Center; second place was awarded to Al Manara Mohammed bin Zayed School; third place was secured by Al Noor Centre for Rehabilitation of People of Determination. Medals were distributed to celebrate their achievements and determination.

This championship underscores the importance of inclusive sports events in fostering social integration and personal growth among people of determination in the UAE.
