Abdul Latif Jameel, Joby Aviation Partner To Introduce Zero-Emission Air Taxis In Saudi Arabia
A landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed by Abdul Latif Jameel, a seasoned conglomerate with 80 years of diverse business operations, and Joby Aviation, Inc., electric air taxis developer for the commercial passenger sector. This MoU paves the way for potential distribution of Joby's innovative electric aircraft within Saudi Arabia.
This collaboration is underpinned by the recent bolstering of economic ties between the US and Saudi governments, focusing on mutual advances in innovation and transportation. It is anticipated that this partnership could see the delivery of up to 200 Joby aircraft, alongside associated services, with an estimated value of around $1 billion over the forthcoming years. The long-term vision extends beyond Saudi Arabia, with revenue opportunities foreseen across the broader Middle East.

JoeBen Bevirt, the Founder and CEO of Joby Aviation, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, "This collaboration is about bringing America's leadership in electric air mobility to the world. Together with Abdul Latif Jameel, we're not just imagining a cleaner, safer, more efficient future—we're building it. And there is no better partner to help unlock the extraordinary opportunity for air travel in the region."
The collaboration between Abdul Latif Jameel and Joby Aviation is set against the backdrop of Saudi Arabia's ambitious transformation towards a more dynamic, demand-driven, shared, connected, and sustainable mobility landscape.
Hassan Jameel, Vice Chairman of Abdul Latif Jameel in Saudi Arabia, highlighted the significance of this venture, stating: "Saudi Arabia is transitioning toward a new era of mobility - one that is on-demand, shared, connected, and sustainable. eVTOL is an exciting and important component of this. We are looking forward to collaborating with Joby to support the transformation of the Kingdom's mobility sector."
The strategic alliance is initially concentrating on Saudi Arabia, leveraging Abdul Latif Jameel's comprehensive network and operational expertise within the kingdom. The partnership aims to explore various avenues of cooperation, including sales and distribution, launching local air taxi services, and establishing essential support services such as Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) and pilot training.
Joby Aviation stands at the forefront of electric aerial mobility, with its piloted, all-electric aircraft designed to transport four passengers at speeds of up to 200 mph. This innovative approach to transportation promises to offer rapid mobility with minimal noise pollution compared to conventional helicopters and zero operational emissions. The company has set its sights on launching passenger services in Dubai by 2026, marking a significant step forward in urban air mobility.
The partnership's foundations are built on shared visions of transforming the future of transportation. Both entities aim to deliver transportation solutions that are not only environmentally friendly but also enhance passenger experiences through heightened efficiency and affordability. Abdul Latif Jameel's involvement in Joby's Series C funding round in 2020, led by Toyota Motor Corporation, further cements their commitment to pioneering sustainable mobility solutions.
The direct sales of aircraft to businesses such as Abdul Latif Jameel represent a critical component of Joby's commercialization strategy. While Joby plans to own and operate its aircraft and services directly in specific markets like the United States, it is also seeking partnerships for similar operations in other regions, including Japan.
