Detroit Pistons And Cade Cunningham Finalize Historic Rookie Extension
The Detroit Pistons and Cade Cunningham, the former No. 1 overall pick, have finalised a five-year, $224 million maximum rookie contract extension. This deal could escalate to $269 million if Cunningham secures All-NBA honours in the 2024-25 season.
Cunningham was selected by Detroit as the top pick in the 2021 NBA Draft after playing one season at Oklahoma State. He earned First-Team All-Rookie honours in his debut season, averaging 17.4 points, 5.6 assists, and 5.5 rebounds over 64 games.

In the 2022-23 season, Cunningham played in Detroit's first 12 games before a stress fracture in his shin required season-ending surgery. Despite this setback, he made a strong comeback last season.
The point guard led his team with averages of 22.7 points and 7.5 assists per game while also contributing 4.3 rebounds across 62 games. However, the Pistons struggled overall, finishing with an NBA-worst record of 14-68.
Since drafting Cunningham, Detroit has recorded a .220 winning percentage (54-192), the lowest in the league. In the 138 games Cunningham has played throughout his career, the Pistons have managed only 32 wins against 106 losses.
"Breaking: Cade Cunningham has agreed on a five-year, $224 million maximum rookie extension that could become worth as much as $269 million," his agents told @wojespn.
{INSTAGRAM_1}Despite individual successes, Cunningham's presence hasn't significantly improved Detroit's performance on the court. The team continues to face challenges in climbing up the NBA standings.
This new contract extension reflects Detroit's confidence in Cunningham's potential to lead them to future success despite past struggles.
