Paul George Secures Four-Year $212M Contract With Philadelphia 76ers
Paul George has agreed to a four-year, $212 million contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. The deal, reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, cannot be signed until the NBA's moratorium on signings is lifted on Saturday. George's move to Philadelphia was confirmed by multiple sources after he informed the Los Angeles Clippers of his decision to leave the team.
The addition of George to a team already featuring 2022-23 NBA MVP Joel Embiid and All-Star Tyrese Maxey positions Philadelphia as a strong contender in the Eastern Conference. The 76ers also secured Maxey with a five-year, $204 million contract extension on Monday. This new lineup aims to challenge the reigning NBA champion Boston Celtics for dominance in the East.

George declined a $48.7 million player option for the 2024-25 season before deciding to join Philadelphia. During his time with the Clippers, he often dealt with injuries but still managed to maintain high performance levels when healthy. In his five seasons there, he averaged 23 points, six rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game while shooting nearly 40% from three-point range.
The Clippers acquired George from Oklahoma City in July 2019 through a significant trade that included five first-round picks and future All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Kawhi Leonard also joined Los Angeles that summer, aiming to transform the Clippers into a top Western Conference team.
Playoff Struggles
Despite their regular-season success, both Philadelphia and Los Angeles have faced challenges in the playoffs. The 76ers have made it to the playoffs for seven consecutive years but have not advanced past the second round during this period. Similarly, the Clippers have struggled in recent post-seasons, losing in the first round for two consecutive years and missing out entirely in 2021-22.
Los Angeles had its own "Big Three" with George, Leonard, and James Harden but failed to achieve significant playoff success. Injuries played a part in their struggles; however, George's consistent performance when healthy was notable.
Philadelphia hopes that adding George will help them overcome their playoff hurdles and make a deep run towards an NBA title. With Embiid and Maxey already on board, expectations are high for this revamped roster.
The new season will reveal if these strategic moves can finally bring postseason success to Philadelphia or if more adjustments will be needed.
